Cuban scholarships: WHO-registered medical courses recognised by PMDC
Islamabad, May 27, 2008: Pakistan Medical and
Dental Council (PMDC) approves only those medical/dental courses, which are
registered with World Health Organisation (WHO), PMDC President Prof Dr Syed
Sibitul Hasnain said on Monday.
He said the Cuban MBBS
programme had certain shortcomings and once they were removed, the PMDC would
have no objections to the degrees obtained by Pakistanis from there. "Some Cuban
medical/dental courses are not listed in the WHO directory," said
Hasnain.
In a recent meeting, the PMDC sought from the Cuban government
and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) update on medical teaching facilities
and health infrastructure of the South American island.
After acquiring a
complete list of faculty members and their qualification and experience, the
PMDC and the HEC would send to Cuba a team of experts, including representative
of the Health Ministry, to judge the standard of medical education, Hasnain
said.
He said the PMDC could not compromise on quality of medical/dental
education as quality education means quality healthcare. He said the issue of
Cuban degrees would be resolved amicably.
In the light of recommendations
of the team, the PMDC would decide whether or not to recognise Cuban MBBS
degrees, he said. It was also decided in the meeting that the PMDC would supply
supplementary curriculum contents to Pakistani students in Cuba to train them
for the PMDC National Board Examination.
Like graduates of other foreign
medical/dental colleges, these students will have to pass the examination for
practise in Pakistan. The PMDC executive committee, Hasnain said, had urged the
Cuban government to explore the possibility of shifting Pakistani students to
top medical institutions.
The HEC and the PMDC have so far held many
meetings on the issues but the controversy remains unresolved. A PMDC team,
comprising Prof Dr Masood Hameed and Prof Dr Abdul Malik, had earlier visited
Cuba to find that medical education facilities, health care and even
accommodation was below standards there.
The team then recommended that
the case of sending another batch of students to Cuba be reviewed. On the
contrary, the HEC is of the view the Cuban medical education is globally
accepted and that it obtained NOC from the PMDC before sending students to the
island.
Background: The Cuban government offered 1,000 MBBS scholarships
to Pakistan after 2005 earthquake and 350 students are currently studying in
Cuba on scholarship. The remaining 650 students have been awaiting departure for

HEC Social Sciences committees review initiatives
Islamabad: The Higher Education Commission's (HEC) Sub-Committees on
Education, Urdu/Regional Languages and Psychology held a series of meetings at
the Social Sciences Secretariat, HEC.
The main objective of the meetings
was to provide recommendations, and review faculty and institutional development
and promotion of research culture in these subjects. The sub-committees
discussed in detail different issues related to HEC approved supervisors, HEC
recognised journals, research grants and national and international linkages,
and suggested certain recommendations for promoting teaching and research in
these disciplines. The committee members lauded the efforts of HEC for
initiating a number of programmes to strengthen Social Sciences and Humanities
in the universities of Pakistan.
The meeting of Sub-committee on
Education was presided over by Prof Dr Ahmed Farooq Mashadi, Chairman Department
of Education, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan while Prof Fateh Muhammad
Malik, President National Language Authority, Islamabad and Dr Najma Najam,
Professor Department of Psychology, University of the Punjab, Lahore presided
over the meetings of Sub-committees on Urdu/Regional Languages and Psychology
respectively.
Prof Dr Riaz-ul-Haq Tariq, Member Academics HEC,
represented the Commission in these meetings and apprised the participants about
the ongoing initiatives of HEC to promote Social Sciences and Humanities.
He asked members of the three sub-committees to play a pivotal role for
the promotion of research and teaching in these disciplines. He assured that HEC
would welcome new ideas and suggestions in strengthening Social Sciences and
Humanities. In its meeting, the Sub-committee on Education approved four
applicants as HEC approved supervisor besides approving a 'Bulletin of Education
and Research' in 'Z' category. It was decided that all applications of the HEC
approved supervisor and HEC recognised journals in the discipline of Education
would be submitted online to HEC.

KMC students boycott classes, hold demonstrations
Peshawar: To protest the mass departure of senior faculty members and feared
de-recognition of the NWFP's prime medical institute - Khyber Medical College
Peshawar - the students Monday boycotted their classes and staged demonstration
on and outside the campus, pressing the government to revive Pakistan Medical
and Dental Council (PMDC) rules in medical colleges.
The protesting
students were of the opinion that it was due to the replacement of PMDC rules
with those of HEC that the promotions of the senior faculty were hampered and
they were compelled to leave the KMC for better options. This has not only
created unrest among the students and teachers but also put the KMC on the verge
of de-recognition. The unanimous demand of the students was that the government
should immediately intervene in the matter and save their future.
Led by
Ashfaq Afridi, Secretary KMC Literary Society, the students gathered on the main
lawn of the college under the aegis of Students Action Committee. They chanted
slogans against the new criteria. They were also holding placards inscribed with
slogans demanding of the government to save the KMC. The students after
arranging a well-attended show on the premises of the college marched to the
press club and staged a big protest demonstration there.
Afterwards, they
walked up to the Governor House where they staged another demo. A five-member
delegation of the students went inside the Governor House and met some senior
officials there who assured them that they would soon arrange their meeting with
the governor. The students also submitted a charter of demands to the
governor.
Students said due to the stoppage of the promotion under the
new rules applied to the college through Khyber Medical University, as many as
20 teachers had left the college and more were about to. They said it was a
major blow to the college and urged the government to immediately take effective
measures to stop departure of the senior faculty members and thus save the
future of medical students in the province. The News
