Karachi, May 15, 2008: The vigilance committee of the Board of Intermediate Education
detected 47 cases of use of unfair means during the exams who have been
prohibited from further exams, according to the Chairman, Intermediate Board,
Anwar Ahmed Zai.
The 46 vigilance teams who were on visit to 89
examination centres found involved 47 students appearing in the second year
examination for using unfair means were stopped giving exams by the
team.
Board Secretary Professor Haider Naveen, Board Chairman Anwar Ahmed
Zai, and Deputy Controller of Examinations Syed Mohammed Ali, paid surprise
visits to different examination centres. They found photostat machines
functioning at different examination centres which according to law is illegal,
as Section 144 had been imposed at the centres by the City
Government.
Taking note of the situation, the board officials sent two
students along with their coordination committee team to the photostat machine
operator requesting them to shut their business during examination hours as it
would be a great loss to deserving students. The photostat machine owners
complied, on the request of the students.
The board officials sent letter
to the home department requesting to enforce Section 144 in letter and spirit by
deploying police force at the examination centres.
The other complaint
which was witnessed was the load-shedding or electricity breakdown that
continued for two-and-a-half hours, from 10.30 to 12noon.

IJT, PSF campus violence at Islamia College
Karachi: The police arrested ten
members of two student organizations on Wednesday as the Islami Jamiat Taliba
(IJT) and Pakhtoon Student Federation (PSF) blamed each other for campus
violence.
The IJT claimed that the fight took place when they tried to
stop PSF students from cheating in the intermediate examinations. "We tried to
stop them but they responded with violence and injured three of our activists,"
the IJT claimed.
The PSF denied the claims and said that their party
workers are not involved in any such activity, saying that in fact it was the
IJT workers who have been caught using unfair means in the examination
centers.
On Wednesday, activists from the two organizations clashed on
the streets. They threw stones at passing vehicles and burnt tyres. "They also
attacked policemen," informed SHO Fawad Akhwan.
The IJT claimed that the
police support the PSF members and therefore arrested only IJT activists. The
SHO denied such allegations and said that members of both parties have been
arrested and FIR No. 168/08 has been registered on behalf of the government.
"They had a fight at the Islamia College and came out on the road to block
traffic," the SHO said. Seniors members of both parties are negotiating with the
police, the officer added. Daily Times

Student dies in clash at Sindh University
Hyderabad: One student was killed when two groups of students
clashed in a Sindh University hostel late on Tuesday night following a dispute
over whether to boycott the ongoing examinations in protest against frequent
power breakdowns and shortage of water.
Earlier, a large number of
students held a demonstration on the Indus Highway in protest against
loadshedding.
On their return to the hostel, they proposed to boycott the
semester examinations, another group of students opposed the proposal which led
to a heated argument.
The Sindh People's Student Federation, the student
wing of the ruling PPP, is reported to be against holding protests and
demonstrations and the proposal to boycott examinations saying that it would
undermine the government.
The argument turned into an armed clash in
which a BSc Part-III student, Abdul Nabi, was hit by a bullet.
He was
rushed to the Liaquat University Hospital in Jamshoro and later to the
hospital's Hyderabad branch when his condition deteriorated. He died on his way
to the hospital.
Jamshoro police have registered an FIR on the complaint
of Mohammad Ishaque against eight people, including student welfare officer
Rafique Brohi.
After the death of the student, some protesters broke the
windowpanes of the ICU ward and damaged some other property of the hospital.

Sindh varsity blamed for student's killing
Hyderabad: The Sindh People's Federation while claiming Tuesday's
clash victim to be their activist held Jeay Sindh Students Federation and Sindh
University administration responsible for the death.
It may be recalled
that Abdul Nabi Brohi, a BSc student of the SU lost his life on Tuesday due to
an armed clash between students over proposal to boycott semester examinations
because of power outages.
Speaking at a press conference here on
Wednesday, the SPSF General Secretary Fayaz Rajpar condemned the killing and
blamed 'vested interests' of trying to destroy academic atmosphere of the
varsity.
He said the JSSF with the backing of the SU administration and
Students' Welfare Officer had killed Abdul Nabi Brohi. Expressing apprehensions
over safety and security of students, he vowed not to let anyone destroy the
peace of university.
He announced three-day mourning for the departed
soul and demanded immediate arrest of the accused. "A five-member committee of
the SPSF has been constituted to conduct inquiry into the incident," he
added.
JSQM: Chairman Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz Basheer Khan Qureshi
has expressed his grief over the murder of Abdul Nabi Brohi.
In a
statement faxed to Dawn, he lamented the incident at the SU and held responsible
the administration. He said it was a conspiracy to conceal misappropriation of
funds and to level ground for Rangers' entry into the premises.
He termed
killers as 'national criminals' and said the direction of the dispute was being
diverted to give cover to murderers under a planned conspiracy.
The JSQM
leader blamed the Sindh government of being involved in the incident to bring
its boys in the students union.
TEACHERS: The Sindh University
Teachers Association, at an urgent meeting, expressed concern over the incident
in which a student lost his life.
The meeting pointed at the negligence
and apathy of the varsity administration. "The incident is enough evidence to
the university administration's impotence and incompetence", the meeting
observed. It cautioned the students against falling in the 'designs of vested
interests' and condemned the behaviour of students' leaders toward
teachers.
The meeting was presided over by Syed Inayatullah Shah,
Association's leader. Dawn
