Teachers stage token hunger strike at Charing Cross
Lahore, May 15: Teachers from various government colleges again took out a rally and
held a hunger strike at the Charing Cross on Thursday to protest against the
government for not fulfilling their demands - promotions and an increase in
salaries. The protest was organised by the Punjab Professors and
Lecturers Association (PPLA). The teachers announced they would hold a protest
comprising of lectures and professors from all government colleges of Punjab on
May 21 from MAO College if their demands were not met by then. The
teachers gathered at the Dayal Singh College in the morning, where they held a
convention. They marched towards the Punjab Assembly and staged a token hunger
strike at the Charing Cross. The traffic remained jammed on adjacent roads for
several hours. The teachers carried placards asking the government to
meet their demands and shouted slogans against it. The protesters said they were
being discriminated against as the salaries of police and doctors had been
increased. The protesting teachers expressed their anger over the delay in
promotions, low salary structure and contractual appointments. "It is extremely
regrettable that officers are sitting in their air-conditioned rooms while the
teachers who taught them are forced to stage protests to voice their demands and
rights," said a contract lecturer. Daily Times

IJT organizes fund raising camp
Lahore: Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) has organized
relief and fund raising camp for the people of Swat, Dir and Buner in Punjab
University. Today first relief camp is organized in Hailey College of Finance in
which a large number of male and female students donated funds. Tomorrow, relief
camps will be organized in every department. Nazim Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) at
the occasion said that the present disastrous situation of the country is due to
the involvement of American intelligence agencies and the failed policies of
Pakistani government are providing success to the negative motives of America,
Israel and India. He said that Pakistan army is one of the best army of the
world and the tribal area's people always played their important positive role
in defence of the country and always stood with Pakistan army. The foreign
offices of India and America in Afghanistan are playing their negative role for
the terrorist activities in Pakistan. Now they want to create similar situation
as they created in 1971 in east Pakistan by generating the feelings of hate
among army and the people of NWFP and Baloochistan. He said that till now more
than 12-lakh people have migrated from their residences in both the provinces.
The government of Pakistan has not taken sufficient measures for the
rehabilitation of these people, now it is the responsibility of students to play
their positive role in order to help their brothers because whenever Pakistan
faced any such situation the students played their vital role to bring country
out of the turmoil. He also demanded from the government to review it's internal
and foreign policy and clearly nominate it's real enemies and friends in order
to bring country out of these security problems. Ppi
