Study in UK: IELTS requirement in new immigration rules
Study in UK: No change in English language requirements
Lahore, May 23: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has
announced that there has been no change regarding English language requirements
to study in the UK despite the fact that the country recently introduced new
immigration rules for foreign students under Tier 4 of the Points Based System.
According to a news release issued by the British Council on Friday,
IELTS UK Stakeholder Relations Manager Carly Moulding says the IELTS is
concerned that new immigration rules for foreign students under Tier 4 of the
Points Based System may have led to some confusion amongst Pakistani students
over the English language requirements to study in the UK. "This confusion may
lead students run the risk of being unsuccessful in their applications, if they
do not submit all documentation required of them by the university," she adds.
She says: "The majority of educational institutions still require
international students to prove their English language ability and IELTS is
still the preferred test accepted by almost all higher education institutions in
the UK." Ms Moulding says Pakistani students looking to enter the UK
with a Tier 4 student visa should first check with their chosen university or
college what minimum English language ability is required for admission. "If the
university or college has asked for proof of English language as part of their
admission requirements, it will need to see documentary evidence," she adds.
She explains that it is a requirement under Tier 4 that the university
or college lists all evidence that it has seen to assess a student's ability to
undertake the course. All applicants will need to provide the same documentary
evidence to the visa officer when they lodge their visa application. Dawn
'English proficiency requirement vital to study in UK'
Karachi: Pakistan students are still required to fulfill English
proficiency requirements to study in UK, said International English Language
Testing System (IELTS) UK Stakeholder Relations, Carly Moulding. While
new immigration rules for foreign students were introduced under Tier 4 of the
Points Based System, IELTS was concerned that this may have led to some
confusion amongst Pakistani students over the English language proficiency
requirements to study in the UK. "It is important to understand that there has
been no change regarding English language requirements to study in the UK,"
Moulding said. Students from Pakistan willing to enter the UK with a
Tier 4 student visa need to check with their concerned institute the English
language ability required, while documentary evidence should be provided if
required. It is a requirement under Tier 4 that the university or college lists
all evidence that it has seen to assess a student's ability to undertake the
course. "We have seen evidence that students may be confused, but this
is very important to clarify as students run the risk of being unsuccessful in
their applications if they do not submit all the documentation required of them
by the university. That documentation is still highly likely to include proof of
their level of English language proficiency," Moulding said. The News

Exam cheating : Ex-MNA's nephew remanded to police custody
Rawalpindi: Civil judge Shabana Risalat Abbasi on Friday gave
Bilal Javed accused of sitting an examination for uncle ex-MNA Haji Pervez Khan
in police custody on a three-day physical remand. The investigation
officer sought the alleged cheater's five-day physical remand, saying police are
to recover original roll number slip from Javed and those who helped him sit the
examination in place of uncle. Besides granting police the youngster's
three-day remand, the court also ordered his production before it on May
25. The accused was later shifted to the City police station for
interrogation. Late last month, a Rawalpindi Board of Intermediate and
Secondary Education (RBISE) team had caught Bilal Javed attempting an FSc paper
in place of uncle Haji Pervaiz Khan at Gordon College. Police arrested
the youth, who was initially granted bail by a magistrate but later denied the
same by an additional district and sessions judge. Haji Pervez also
resigned as MNA after failing to prove innocence in the case before a PML-N
inquiry committee. Daily Times

Students clash with transport staff
Multan: Students of the Government Technical Training Centre clashed
with employees of a private transport company on Friday after they allegedly
tortured a student. Angry students damaged three buses of the IB
Transport Company, scuffled with its employees and blocked Khanewal Road,
causing a traffic jam there. Later, police reached the scene and arrested at
least 12 students. Police also resorted to baton-charge and aerial firing.
Earlier, the employees of the transport company allegedly entered the
institution and tortured the teaching staff, including principal Amjad Ali.
New Multan police had not registered FIR of the case till Thursday
evening when this report was filed. Punjab Association of Instructors
president Nazar Abbas said transport company employees tortured student Zubair
who was travelling by a bus from Chungi No. 9 to his college. Zubair informed
his fellows about the incident and a clash ensued.

Swat varsity VC calls Taliban 'khwarijis'
Lahore: Swat University Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Farooq has said the
Taliban are the 'khwarijis' and totally differ with the beliefs of Muslims at
large. In his keynote address at a roundtable on the Swat situation at
the Pakistan Institute of National Affairs here on Friday with Maj-Gen Kh Rahat
Latif in the chair, he said the Taliban and Soofi Muhammad were at the same
wavelength in their understanding of Islam. He said both condemned the
Constitution, democracy and women education as 'shirk' and were determined to
destroy the "Taghooti Nizam" and enforce their version of Shariah at gunpoint.
Dr Farooq said the Taliban had the most advanced arms and communication
system and were financed by all anti-American forces in the world. Moreover, he
said Russia, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, India and the USA had strategic
interests in this part of Pakistan. The present military operation if
halted at this stage would be critically dangerous for the nation, he said and
cautioned that if armed forces kept 15 per cent of the Taliban as future asset,
it would surely endanger the safety of Pakistan. Tracing the events
leading to the promulgation of Nizam-i-Adl, he said that despite strong
resistance from the US the ANP provincial government promulgated the ordinance
after getting it endorsed by parliament. However, he said the Taliban grossly
violated the agreement by refusing to lay down arms and by deploying themselves
rapidly in Buner and Lower Dir. Soofi Muhammad refused to cooperate in
the appointment of qazis and the political and military leadership in a
desperate situation decided to launch a fresh military operation, he said.
Dr Farooq said the heinous designs of militants were exposed by their
atrocities which sharply reduced their public support. Al-Khidmat Trust
secretary-general Ehsanullah Waqas, who visited Buner, narrated the miseries of
hundreds of thousands of displaced persons as well as the heroic deeds of the
local population in accommodating the affected brothers. Lamenting the
callous attitude of the men in bureaucracy towards the hard-hit refugees, he
demanded that Al-Rasheed Trust and Jamatud Dawa be permitted to serve the
humanity as they did in the earthquake of 2005. Falah-e-Insaniat
Foundation vice-chairman Mian Sabdullah said that little attention was being
paid to those old citizens who were left behind in the battlefield areas and
demanded that the army and the government should make special efforts to look
after them. Social worker Mrs Naheed Tahir said the political and
military leadership must respond to the basic question as to who was responsible
for the growth of Taliban into a monster threatening the very stability of the
country. Farooq Chohan criticized the role of America and accused her of
playing a double game with Pakistan. PINA secretary-general Altaf Hasan
Qureshee urged the nation to support the armed forces engaged in a crucial
battle of survival. He said the military operation should be limited,
quick and result-oriented and the extremism be cured through education
mainstreaming the seminaries and social development. In his presidential
remarks, Maj-Gen (retired) Kh Rahat Latif said that at this point of time the
armed forces should have public support and diplomatic measures be adopted to
check the US from dictating Pakistan.

School admin assured of solution to problems
Hunza: The Northern Areas Secretary Education, Ejaz Asad Rasul, assured
the school management committee of Federal Boys High School, Aliabad that
all-out efforts would be made to resolve their problems. He was talking
to the committee members and community representatives after the closing session
of a teacher training programme at the high school on Friday. The committee
briefed the secretary about the condition of both the school building and
academics. They said the behaviour of the officials of the education department
forced them to restrain the school children to take classes for about five days.
They praised the Assistant Commissioner Hunza, Zameer Abbas, and Amir Khan,
tehsildar Aliabad, for forwarding the school issues to the concerned
authorities. The secretary assured them to allocate funds for the
improvement of the school building, new furniture and construction of toilets,
library and laboratory. He said that science teachers would be provided to the
school. The secretary assured them to transfer the absentee lab
assistant from the school and appointment of the community-appointed teacher as
permanent physical training instructor in the school. He expressed his concern
over the worst result of the school during the last three years. The committee
demanded to post a competent head master at the school in order to improve the
academic performance. The secretary directed the assistant district
inspector of the schools in Central Hunza to submit a detailed report and
proposal to its office regarding the school. He also visited the
building of the school and expressed his disappointment over the shabby
condition of the model school. The secretary was accompanied by the Hunza
Assistant Commissioner, Zameer Abbas, Aliabad Tehsildar Amir Khan, Dinar Khan,
chairman and other local union council members. Dawn
