Reappointment in KU slated
Karachi: The Karachi University Teachers' Society (Kuts) has
criticised the re-appointment of Professor Saleem Memon as director of
KU's Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Chair for two years and demanded that the
decision be withdrawn. The professor who retired on Friday (May 28) was reappointed by KU Chancellor Dr Ishratul Ibad on May 26. Prof Memon was also the dean of KU arts faculty.
Expressing concern over the development, the teachers' society has
stated that the reappointment of Prof Memon was regrettable as KU
teachers had earlier shown reservations when he was freshly appointed
as director of the chair. "Prof Memon is neither an MPhil,
nor a PhD. He has not done any research on Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai,"
Kuts members stated in a recent meeting whose minutes were released on
Friday. Prof Memon was not available for comments. Dawn

Students protesting against police baton-charged again
Khairpur: Students boycotted classes and examinations at the
Shah Abdul Latif University on Friday and took out a procession to
protest police action against protesting students on Thursday and
arrest of 10 students. Police lobbed tear-gas shells and used
batons on the students' procession when they were protesting for the
second consecutive day against lack of facilities, particularly power
generator at hostels. They started the protest on Wednesday. On Friday, they marched four kilometres on the National Highway to the
press club, raising slogans against police and university
administration when police tried to disperse them near Eidgah. They
used batons again when the students tried to press ahead. Activists of several labour organisations, including Sachal Tailors'
Union also joined the protesters who managed to reach the press club
through alternate roads and streets. Their leaders condemned
police torture and said they were protesting against their genuine
problems but police manhandled them and used tear gas. Mohammad Raza Khaskheli, a student, fell unconscious at the press club.
He was moved to a hospital in a police mobile van brought there by SPO
city Umer Salamat. Labour leaders Shahbaz Dino and Arab Khoso
said that May 27 would be remembered in Khairpur as the day of
baton-charge on students. Meanwhile, office-bearers of the
Shah Abdul Latif University Teachers' Association led by Prof Dr Nawaz
Chand and Asad Raza Abidi held a demonstration outside the office of
the vice-chancellor on Friday in protest against police misbehaviour. Khairpur DCO Mohammad Abbas Baloch said after meeting the
university's vice-chancellor Dr Nilofer Shaikh and officers of the
university administration that it was decided that a separate
electricity feeder would be arranged for the university which required
Rs10 million. Local poets, writers, TV actors and announcers
have also condemned the university administration and police excesses
against students. They said that the police action had refreshed in their minds memories of dictatorship. Dawn
