CPSP to open online FCPS exams soon
Lahore, May 12: Adding yet another feather to its cap, College of Physicians and
Surgeons Pakistan is all set to start online examination of FCPS part-I from the
coming year to facilitate thousands of medical graduates.
The CPSP, a prestigious medical institution established in 1962 on the
pattern of the Royal College of Physicians London, has decided to start online
examination for over 10,000 graduates appearing in FCPS part-I every year. The
CPSP, however, will run the present system parallel to the online examination
for a couple of years till complete conversion to the e-exam. Vice President and Regional Director CPSP Lahore Prof Dr Khalid
Masood Gondal said the introduction of online examination of FCPS part-I was
aimed at modernising the system and facilitating growing number of students.
Referring to the achievements of CPSP, he said that the fellows of this
prestigious medical institution with seven-year experience were going to Saudi
Arabia as visiting consultants for a period of three months with an emolument
from SR 33,000 to SR 48,000. "CPSP is the only institution amongst the
developing countries to impose residency programme in medical education like
developed countries. Royal College of Physicians London has appreciated the
programme and signed an MoU with the CPSP. According to this MoU, the doctors
after completing initial two years of education at CPSP would be able to get
further training in England", he said. "Over 19,000 medical specialists are
serving in civil and armed forces medical institutions and fulfilling 85 percent
needs of the country. CPSP is the only institution in Pakistan conducting
fellowship examinations in 64 different specialties. CPSP has 13 regional
centers across the county and three centers abroad. Presently, more than 13,000
trainees in 146 and 2,500 trainees in 96 institutions are getting training
within the country and abroad respectively", he said, adding, the centers in
Saudi Arabia and Nepal were working efficiently and new ones were being
established in UAE and Kuwait. Referring to the administrative working of CPSP, Prof Khalid Masood Gondal said
that 'the elected council of fellows is responsible for all the administrative
and other matters of this autonomous institution'. "Out of 20 members
Council, 11 are from Punjab, 6 from Sindh, two from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one
from Balochistan. The present council under the leadership of its President Prof
Zafar Ullah Chaudhry has not only raised the prestige of the college but also
made all possible attempts to solve the problems of the fellows and
postgraduates trainees", he said. Now all four provincial centers and
headquarters are provided with the video conferencing facility, an important and
revolutionary step that will help in provision of quality medical education.
Trauma Course of International level has been started in collaboration with
American College of Surgeons. Pakistan stands first to attain this landmark
among the SAARC Countries. Another advance level programme (ACLS) has also been
started", he said.
