642 pre-medical students for Cuban scholarship

ISLAMABAD, May 5(Daily Times): 642 students will constitute the last batch for General Medicine Studies in Cuba. The programme has been jointly sponsored by the Cuban Republic and Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC).

The Cuban government had announced the scholarship for 1,000 Pakistani students in 2005 when a Cuban medical and relief team visited Pakistan to help earthquake victims in NWFP and AJK. According to HEC, selected students expected to leave in August this year will complete their five-year graduate studies in general comprehensive medicine (equivalent to MBBS) in Maximo Santiago Haza, a leading Cuban medical institute recognised by the World Health Organisation. These students will also undergo a one-year language-training programme in Spanish in Cuba.

Cuba is hosting Muslim students for the first time and Pakistani students are among the 27,000 international students, belonging to 120 countries, studying in Cuba. Cultural and religious facilities will also be provided to fulfil students' particular requirements.

Out of 1,000, two hundred scholarships are reserved for applicants from earthquake-affected areas, as defined by the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA). The remaining 800 scholarships are being awarded to students from other areas of Pakistan on a provincial quota basis. All Pakistani and AJK nationals between the ages of 17 and 25 years securing at least 60 percent marks in FSc or A-level may apply for this programme before June 9, 2007.

O-level and A-level students, however, will have to provide an equivalent degree from the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen. Those candidates who applied for the first batch will have to reapply.
