HEC approves research centre for UHS Lahore
ISLAMABAD, May 23(Daily Times): The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved a
project for the establishment of an endocrinology and reproductive sciences
research centre at the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore.
The
decision was taken at the commission's Departmental Development Working Party.
The project is expected to strengthen the base of biomedical research in the
country by offering postgraduate research programmes leading to PhD degrees for
them. The centre will also enhance research linkages with institutions
conducting similar research in the country.
The centre will encourage
research in Diabetes Type 2 cases during childhood and adolescence in the local
population and development of biomarkers for early detection of the disease.
Studies on thyroidal function shall also be carried out in relation to nutrition
and abnormal growth.
The centre will attract scientists and physicians
for short-term training in endocrine and reproductive techniques of two to six
weeks and invite foreign and local experts for lectures in research advisory
capacity for one to four weeks. These initiatives will be sponsored jointly by
the centre and the Department of Medical Education, UHS. The university has
already established postgraduate departments of anatomy, biochemistry,
microbiology and immunology, pathology, physiology and cell biology, medical
education and allied health sciences offering PhD, MPhil and MSc level degrees.
