PU dean of science cleared of cheating
LAHORE, May 17(Daily Times): The inquiry committee
formed by the Punjab University to investigate plagiarism charges against the
dean of the Faculty of Science on Wednesday submitted its report to the vice
chancellor, stating that an article that the dean wrote and was published in a
newspaper was not plagiarised.
Three teachers
from the university's Centre for Higher Energy Physics (CHEP) had alleged that
dean Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran's article 'Max Planck: The Reluctant Revolutionary',
which was published in an English daily in 1995, was plagiarised.
After
thorough investigation, the committee could not find any truth in the
allegations.
The CHEP teachers, who made the allegations, are Maqsood
Ahmad, Rasheed Ahmad and Alam Saeed. Allegations against the men to have
plagiarised research articles have been proven true.
After the
allegations against the dean, university vice chancellor Arshad Mehmood formed a
committee to investigate the charges. The committee headed by Prof Dr Shahida
Hasnain, dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, stated that Dr Kamran's newspaper
article had substance from three articles namely 'Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck,
1858-1947', 'The Dilemmas of an Upright Man' and 'Max Planck: The Man and His
Work'. The committee said Dr Kamran's article had the reference of Max Born,
author of one of the three articles.
According to the committee, "The
reference of Max Born was given in the beginning of the article and a
significant part of the article was modified and statements were given within
quotation marks and therefore it cannot be considered as plagiarised."
PU
registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan confirmed the news, saying the committee
found the dean innocent of charges against him.

"It is sad and disappointing that Dean Sciences PU has been subjectd to persecution and intimidation for standing up for academic honesty. Those who brought the malicious charges against him should be taken to the court for trying to malign him."
