Punjab University college status change notice withdrawn
LAHORE, May 28(Daily Times): Punjab University (PU) additional registrar Mustansar
Javaid said on Sunday that the university had withdrawn its notification on
changing the status of PU constituent colleges.
He said that
the notification was withdrawn so that the university syndicate could debate on
the issue before it were implemented. He said university wanted to know the
opinion of all stakeholders over the issue. He called baseless the impression
that the notification was withdrawn following resentment by PU faculty
members.
However, university sources said the withdrawal was the outcome
of strong opposition and resentment by university faculty members who had
denounced the decision to give control over the PU constituent colleges to an
independent board of governors.
They said the decision had caused great
unrest among the faculty members of all constituent colleges and that the latter
were of the opinion that the move could 'disintegrate' the university besides
making education too expensive for students.
PU vice chancellor Arshad
Mehmood had used his discretionary powers under Section 15(3) of the PU Act 1973
and issued a notification number D/1482/Acad, on May 14 stating that the status
of PU's constituent colleges would change and they would be placed under the
control of a board of governors. On Saturday the entire teaching faculty of the
PU Faculty of Law met and unanimously demanded the vice chancellor withdraw the
notification, calling it 'malafide and unlawful'.
PU Academic Staff
Association (PUASA) president Dr Mumtaz Salik also expressed the apprehension of
the teaching community over the 'secret' move, alleging that the VC had abused
his authority by issuing the notification. He said changing the status of the PU
constituent colleges was part of the government's agenda to privatise the
education sector.
Elected representatives of the faculty members of the
PU syndicate wrote to the VC on Friday, urging him to withdraw the notification.
