Inquiry ordered into assault on Quaid-i-Azam University teacher
ISLAMABAD, May 28(Daily Times): The academic community of the Quaid-i-Azam University
was in a state of shock on Thursday when a university teacher was assaulted by a
student at the university's Area Study Centre.
Vice Chancellor Qasim Jan
on Saturday appointed a committee headed by Prof Eitzaz Ahmad of the Economics
Department and a University Senate member to investigate the matter. The QUA
Academic Staff Association will hold an emergency protest meeting on
Monday.
According to sources, Amir Shehzad Ranjha, enrolled in his fourth
semester, assaulted a senior research fellow Munawwar Hussain at the Area Study
Centre for not giving Ranjha a passing grade in the session exams. Ranjha was
fined twice earlier by the University Provost Office for engaging in violent
acts against fellow students. His accomplices, who also threatened the concerned
teacher before and after the assault, include Sardar Shoaib and Sufian
Sikandar.
A group of senior professors met the vice chancellor on
Saturday and urged him to take serious action against the students concerned so
the teaching community could regain its sense of security.
