"Each vice-chancellor will be paid Rs 63,570 every month as accommodation allowance and Rs 5,298 as a utility allowance. Accommodation and utility allowances will be 60 and 5 percent of the salary," sources added.

Sources said that VCs would be provided with a chauffeur driven 1300cc car for official and private use with 270 litres of petrol every month, while more petrol for official tours could also be claimed.

According to the new terms and conditions, the TA/DA for vice chancellors for domestic and abroad tours will be according to the civil servant of the highest grade.

An official of the Education Department said said that earlier VCs were paid salaries of BS-22 officers. "Following the increase in salaries of university teachers under the Higher Education Commission's (HEC) Tenure Track System (TTS), it was decided that salaries and perks of vice chancellors should also be increased," the official added.

The official said that in 2005, the federal government increased salaries of university teachers working under TTS on the recommendations of the HEC. The official said that a professor appointed under the TTS got Rs 174,200 every month, while an associate professors got Rs 94,300 and an assistant professor got Rs 66,100 every month.
