Anti-IJT body: IJT rally: PU exams
Students to form Anti-IJT body
LAHORE, Nov 22: Anti-Jamiat students of the Punjab University (PU), who have been
participating in protest rallies against the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), are
planning to launch a student organisation to jointly work for permanent removal
of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) student wing from the university.
These views
were expressed by some students of the Punjab University including Fahad Akram,
Ali Abbas, Atif Ranjha, Khurram Bhatti and other students while addressing a
press conference at Lahore Press Club on Wednesday. They said PU students have
vowed to kick out IJT from the university forever since they are against its
policies and actions especially after manhandling and subsequent arrest of Imran
Khan. They said Jamiat has never represented PU students and has been involved
in anti-student activities at campus. PU students further alleged that Jamiat
has set up torture cells within the varsity, adding they have deep rooted
connections with some of the university teachers and administration owing to
which no one is ready to take strong action against them.
The speakers
of the press conference further alleged that IJT activists are threatening
students of taking part in anti-Jamiat rallies at the university because of
which students are very disturbed. "This is a highly condemnable act and PU
admin and Chancellor should take notice of the issue", they demanded. They
further said Jamiat activists have no tolerance and they do not believe in
patience, equality besides rights of the students owing to which students are
against them. "The massive protests against Jamiat at PU prove that anti-Jamiat
sentiments are prevailing among varsity students", they further added. They also
alleged that incident of the PU Institute of Communication Studies (PUICS) in
which its director was manhandled while some employees were roughed up was
pre-planned event by IJT activists. They also demanded the Chancellor and
government kick out political elements from the PU. They said PTI Chief Imran
Khan is a national hero adding PU students are very disturbed by his manhandling
and arrest by Jamiat activists.
Replying to a question, one of the
speakers said Anti-Jamiat students of the PU are not following agenda of any
political party rather they are raising their voices against the injustice and
atrocities of IJT activists. Replying to yet another question, the PU students
said curbs on media are proof of Musharraf's negative policies towards
media. The News
IJT joins PU teachers rally
LAHORE: Nov 22, 2007: The Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) took out a rally at the
Punjab University's (PU) New Campus against the suspension of the constitution
and the imposition of curbs on the media. Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) workers
joined the rally and marched along with the teachers.
The PU students
protesting against the IJT have criticised the teachers for taking out a joint
rally with the IJT. They said the teachers supported the IJT because many of
them had been member of the IJT in their student years.
The rally started
from the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology and ended near Sheikh
Zayed Islamic Centre. A strong police contingent had been deployed at the centre
to stop the rally. Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool was attending the
concluding ceremony of the International Conference on Plant Pathology in the
auditorium of the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre at the time of the
rally.
PUASA president Dr Mumtaz Salik addressed the rally. He said
nobody had the right to violate the constitution or ban the media. He said the
PU teachers would continue their struggle until the restoration of the
constitution.
Carrying banners, placards and wearing black armbands, the
teachers attended a PUASA general body meeting before the rally. The meeting
passed resolutions vowing to continue protesting against the imposition of
emergency and suspension of the constitution. Through another resolution, the
PUASA condemned the manhandling and arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman
Imran Khan, manhandling of Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) Prof
Mugheesuddin Sheikh, the arrest of lawyers and the registration of an FIR
against 14 PU professors for taking out an anti-emergency rally.
The
PUASA vowed to boycott all functions attended by the governor the cases against
the 14 teachers were withdrawn. They also demanded the reinstatement of all
judges on their pre-emergency positions.
PUASA secretary Dr Asmatullah
said the IJT workers were not part of their rally. He said it was difficult to
identify outsiders in largely attended rallies.
IJT press secretary Imran
Kiyani said the IJT workers had participated in the teachers' rally to express
solidarity with the teachers in their struggle against the emergency and the
curbs on the media.
Amir Ilyas, a PU student, said the PU teachers were
'not fair'. He said they were protesting along with the IJT, "who had disgraced
