Arabic for class six to eight made optional subject
ISLAMABAD, Nov 14, 2007: Owing to scarcity of Arabic language teachers in the country the Ministry of Education has made the compulsory Arabic subject of the class sixth, seventh and eighth as optional, learnt reliably on Tuesday.
Earlier it was a compulsory subject for these classes but for the running educational year the ministry changed it to be an optional subject. Now in the schools where teachers are available the principals have allowed the teachers to teach it. But in most of the schools the principals have introduced the combinations of different subjects including Computer science, Physical Education, Home Economics, Drawing, Agriculture and Moral Education.
But the whole exercise ended in fiasco as the Ministry failed to provide books for other optional subjects. Educational year has started from August 15 and the students going to take their 1st term examination from 26th November still have not been provided with course books.
A teacher from Islamabad College for Boys, G-6/3, requesting anonymity said if the ministry could not provide books on time then it shouldn't had been offered these subjects so that the students could continue the previous subject. "The students have suffered a lot due to the lack of coordination and ill planning within the ministry," said the teacher.
Another principal from a girl's college said there were few people who opted M.A Arabic, as it was a difficult subject and one of the main reasons of shortage of Arabic teachers was the non-availability of the post for Arabic Language in the schools.
However, the spokesperson of the ministry believes that Arabic is still being taught in the schools and from the next educational year a new curriculum is being introduced across the country according to which the students from 1st to 10th class will be taught the complete book of the Holy Quran.
