BNU students protest emergency

LAHORE, Nov 09, 2007: A large number of Beaconhouse National University (BNU) students observed a Black Day against the imposition of emergency in the country, arrests of people and suspension of the Constitution, Thursday.

They wore black armbands and some were clad in black clothes to register their protest. However, neither they chanted slogans nor did they stage a protest demonstration.

Talking to us, a few BNU students, on condition of anonymity, said they are quite angry over the prevailing situation in the country.

They added they could not air their sentiments over the situation in the way LUMS students did since their varsity's management had strictly forbidden them to do so.

Most of the students resented suspension of human rights in the country. They claimed all the students are united in their demand for restoration of human rights.

They also claimed that students from LUMS and FAST-NU are in constant contact with them. All of them have vowed to continue expressing their resentment within their respective campuses against the suspension of the Constitution, the BNU students maintained.

At this point, a student asserted, "We will continue to protest peacefully." On invitation of the students, BNU School of Visual Arts Dean Salima Hashmi narrating saga of her and of other human rights activists after the emergency proclamation said the arrests were without any warrants and that the police misbehaved with her.

A number of LUMS students were also present on the occasion, they vowed to support BNU students in their struggle for the restoration of Constitution. Several plainclothesmen were also present outside the BNU campus yesterday.

Meanwhile, a group of LUMS students staged a protest demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club on Thursday and chanted anti-government slogans.

When the police asked them to stop their protest otherwise they would be arrested, the students dispersed. The News
