Bahria University threatens expulsion
Islamabad, Nov 21, 2007: Bahria University has threatened its students with expulsion
and other measures if they participate in any anti-government protests in the
aftermath of emergency imposed in the country on November 3.
According to
a press statement issued here on Tuesday, the Student Action Committee of twin
cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad has condemned the repression of students by
various university administrations, singling out in particular the
administration of Bahria University which has threatened its students with
expulsion and other
'draconian measures' if they participate in any
anti-government protests.
Efforts to coordinate student protests have
intensified as the resurgence of student activism continues to provide major
impetus to the movement against 'martial law'. The recently formed Student
Action Committee in Islamabad, a body comprising university, college and school
students have contacted a similar gathering of students in Lahore to coordinate
protests in the coming days.
Meanwhile, university protesters in England
have also contacted student organisers in Islamabad and Lahore to build the
budding student movement.
The committee has asserted that this is yet
another indicator of the hollow claims of 'enlightened moderation' and 'genuine
democracy' that have been propagated by the government. Indeed, only a society
in which students are able to openly voice their dissent can be considered a
democratic society. The News
