Beaconhouse National University bookfair
LAHORE, Nov 06, 2007: A large number of Beaconhouse National University (BNU)
students on Monday visited a two-day annual bookfair held on the campus. "The
purpose of organising the fair is that we want to develop a reading culture
amongst our students," BNU vice-chancellor (VC) Sartaj Aziz said, "With the
advent of computer and Internet, our youth has stopped reading books." The
university had invited 18 publishers to display their books.
All books were
being sold on a 20 percent discount. "Bookfairs are a healthy activity. A number
of rare books are also available here," said Zainab Younis, a journalism
student. She said the university should arrange bookfairs every three months.
"We can't visit markets to buy our favourite books because of our busy routine,"
said Arooj, a psychology student. Mehreen, another student, said she was
delighted to find very interesting books on Islam and history. BNU School of
Liberal Arts dean Prof Naveed Shahzad said, "Books are essential for familiarity
with almost every subject, including music, theatre, history and literature." No
one could know their roots and culture without reading books, she said. Daily Times
