College teachers can't run centres
KARACHI, Nov 28, 2007: College teachers will not be permitted to give tuitions
or run coaching centers during college timings and those found doing so will be
severely dealt with, said caretaker Education Minister Shujaat Ali Baig to
college principals at Adamjee Science College Tuesday.
Baig added that
the majority of parents were not satisfied with the standard of education at
government colleges and preferred private colleges. He pointed out that a lot of
the senior doctors, scientists and politicians in the country today were
graduates from government-run schools and colleges and there was no excuse for
the slack today.
The minister also proposed a plan for a
hygiene-awareness week in all city colleges starting November 28 and asked all
principals to have cleaned their campuses, especially the
washrooms.
Concern over proper arrangements for potable drinking water
was also voiced at the meeting, and the minister added that he will be paying
surprise visits to colleges during the drive.
The caretaker minister also
stressed the importance of implementing the 75 percent mandatory attendance rule
and asked the principals to withhold examination forms from students who do not
meet this criterion.
Secretary Education Dr Mohammad Ali said the
shortage of teachers in the colleges would be tackled immediately. So would the
pending issue of the promotion of some teachers. Director General (Colleges)
Sindh, Prof. Rafique Ahmed Siddiqui, along with the regional director and
director of colleges also attended the meeting. ppi
