DJ college teachers protest
Karachi, Nov 18, 2007: The government has decided to rent out the playground of the Government D.J. Science College adjacent to a local five-star hotel for parking purposes, it was learnt.
In this connection, a few armed men entered the premises forcibly and started excavation work, as the concerned authorities said that an education complex was being built on the ground, which due to be inaugurated by the Sindh Chief Minister on Sunday (today).
Confirming this, the Sindh Professor and Lecturers Association (SPLA) President, Professor Riaz Ahsan, in a press conference held on Saturday said that the government in the name of an education complex wanted to use the playground for commercial purposes.
However, he said that students and teachers will stage a protest demonstration at the campus of the D.J. College on Monday against allegedly occupying the playground of D.J. Science College.
Professor Ahsan alleged that the land grabbers illegally occupied the playground of D.J. Science College and wanted to use it for commercial purposes, depriving the students of recreational opportunities.
The government wanted to destroy the ground and on this pretext, the education complex would rent out the place to a local hotel for private parking, he alleged. He also informed that the college Principal, Hakimullah Beg Chughtai, had written a letter to the director general, colleges, with copies sent to the Sindh governor, chief secretary, Sindh, to intervene and get the issue resolved.
He categorically said that the ground had been the college's property since it was established in 1887, which the students had been using for sports activities. He said that it had been learnt that a high-rise Sports Complex was planned on the said ground and its upper portion will be used for commercial purposes and the basement as the parking lot, thus killing the very concept of a sports ground.
The SPLA teachers said that they had brought the matter to the knowledge of the governor, Sindh, demanding the immediate stop of illegal construction forthwith, failing which the professors would stage protest demonstrations outside the D.G. College on Monday. The News

"So sad! I went to DJ about 20 yrs ago and we had fun times at the sports complex. Now *** gundas are trying to grab this prime piece of land and use it for their vile purpose. It seems that these days everything has to be turned into commercial value with total disregard for aesthetics. I cry for the future of my dear city. "
