Education Secy told to remain tight-lipped
Karachi, Nov 25, 2007: The caretaker Education Minister Shujaat Ali Beg, has categorically issued instructions to the Secretary, Education, not to provide any details regarding education department, whether it pertains to appointment, recruitment or other matters.
Choudhry Mohammed Ali, Secretary, Sindh Education Department, convened meeting of all EDOs on Saturday to review the overall situation with special reference to new appointments that are raising eyebrows, that the outgoing Secretary Education and Chief Minister had recruited about 9000 teachers based on favouritism.
When contacted the Secretary Education, he made it clear that he had been asked not to say even a word and instead asked the correspondent to contact the Education Minister.
Interestingly, before dissolution of assemblies, the ministry was bifurcated with College Education being looked after by Hamida Khuro while portfolio of School Education was held by the then Chief Minister, Arbab Ghulam Rahim.
With the announcement of caretaker government, it was not clear whether or not both college and school education would be hold by caretaker Education Minister.
Appointments and recruitments were the basic bone of contention that created differences between the two, which resulted in the division of the department.
The secretary Education, according to sources, called meeting after Sindh Chief Secretary Ejaz Qureshi had sent a letter to all the administrative secretaries and EDOs to be careful during recruitment in the department and were warned of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and other investigating agencies.
These instructions were issued when reportedly around 9000 appointment letters were issued to PST and HST teachers by the then Chief Minister and former Secretary Education Subhago Khan Jatoi.
It was also learnt through reliable sources, that transfer of Subhago Khan Jatoi was also the part of this game, as both former CM and former Secretary Education were involved in this money minting-job sharing formula, under which 60 percent appointments were allocated to rural Sindh to people having affiliations with the Q league, while 40 percent were awarded to both MQM and PML (F).
