Distribution of examination copies

Karachi, Nov 01, 2007: In the coming academic year, a substantial number of the examination scripts of MA Final (Economics) for external candidates will be sent to the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (FUUAST), Jinnah University for Women (JUW) and Mohammad Ali Jinnah University (MAJU) for marking, said Dr Shafeeq-ur-Rahman, chairman, department of Economics, University of Karachi (KU).

"We have decided to do this because of the delays caused by a huge number (about 15,000) of examination copies, of the four compulsory and five optional papers of the MA (Previous) and about the same number of MA (Final), for external candidates that are checked by 10 teachers from the department and some colleges," he said. The teachers submit the checked copies to the controller of examinations directly. The responsibility of the respective department's chairman is to provide copies to the examiners.

Rahman said, on Tuesday that all the copies were handed over to the controller of examinations and, currently, they are being tabulated before the announcement of the results. "We have 17 teachers in the department. Two teachers usually do not check the copies and three are on study leave abroad. The 10 teachers and one from DHA College checked the copies. So every teacher had to mark more than 1,000 copies. This makes the task difficult," he explained.

According to him they have to be very careful in providing examination scripts to the teachers. "We have to be very careful to select the right teacher from the colleges, who teach economics to the postgraduate classes, to maintain a certain degree of educational standards," he elaborated. The other reasons that compounded the problem were unusual closures of the university, rains and Ramazan. "We have to take in account that all these factors hampered the progress of the teachers while checking the examination copies. The News
