GCU to get 370 acres at Kala Shah Kaku

LAHORE, Nov 09, 2007: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool on Thursday said the Government College University College (GCU) had been allocated 370 acres of land at Kala Shah Kaku to establish a new campus.

Addressing the International Statistical Conference on "Survival Data Analysis", he said the Higher Education Commission (HEC) had also allocated Rs 4 billion to upgrade the university.

He said there were a few countries in the world, which had as much statistical data as of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

He said the government had spent Rs 8 billion on social action programme, but it came out to be an abortive attempt without proper statistical planning and strategies.

GCU vice chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab said his institution was proving to be a torchbearer of golden traditions and urged students to discover the new horizon in the discipline of statistics.

The organiser of the conference and dean faculty of the arts and social sciences, Prof Dr Muhammad Khalid Pervaiz, also spoke on the occasion.

The conference was organised by the department of statistics of GCU in collaboration with the HEC and Pakistan Science Foundation.

Earlier, a 40-member delegation of traders, led by Punjab Qaumi Tajir Ittehad president Babar Akbar Butt called on the governor at the Governor House on Thursday and ensured its support to the government.

The governor said February 15, 2008 had been fixed for general elections. He advised the opposition to go to parliament instead of creating uncertainty in society.

The governor said the government had imposed emergency for stability of country. He said that there was no disturbance among the masses and the situation in Pakistan was conducive for business activities.

He said that the due to trade-friendly policies of the government, grand domestic production (GDP) had increased from Rs 300 billion to Rs 1,000 billion. Daily Times
