Varsities will not be allowed to become commercial: HEC
LAHORE, Nov 11, 2007: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) will never allow any university to become a commercial organisation, said HEC executive director Dr Sohail H Naqvi on Saturday.
Addressing a conference on "Financing the higher education in Pakistan, new challenges of 21st century", he said that HEC had started various scholarship programmes to produce highly skilled university teachers. He regretted that some universities were imparting poor quality education and were also producing graduates without keeping in view the national requirements, said a GCU press release issued on Saturday. Naqvi said the HEC was investing billions of rupees to improve infrastructure and management of universities.
He said that universities should not depend on the government grants, but should generate funds thought their own resources.
Addressing the conference, GCU vice chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Aftab said a policy to open new universities without availability of resources was contrary to the goal of enhancing quality education in the country. He demanded sustainable grants for universities.
Prof Dr Pervez Tahir, Prof Dr Aliya H Khan, and Dr AH Nayyer also spoke on the occasion. The conference was jointly organised by the HEC and GCU department of economics. Daily Times
