HEC claims of reforms 'being regarded globally'
Islamabad, Nov 28, 2007: Higher Education Commission (HEC) is gradually changing the
landscape of the country's higher education sector by promoting academic
excellence and reforms introduced by HEC in universities are now being admired
internationally.
This was stated by Federal Minister and Chairman HEC
Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman while addressing the third vice chancellors committee
meeting here Tuesday aimed at discussing core issues of the agenda relating to
development of the country's higher education sector.
Pakistan is among
the few countries where public and private sector universities have access to
40,000 e-books, 23,000 electronic journals as well as the videoconference
facility, the chairman said. He emphasised upon the VCs to increase research
work in their universities through which theirs would be judged as a creative
university.
HEC scholarships are now attracting talented students to go
abroad and on their return, they are being adjusted in the universities, he
said.
Dr Atta ur Rehman stressed upon the universities to develop zero
tolerance for plagiarism, adding that teachers should not be cheaters. He
further said that HEC would fund the universities for developing technological
parks, which would help the industrial sector.
Dr Shams Kasim Lakha,
Federal Minister for Education and Science & Technology made a presentation
before the VCs explaining that our universities should now aim for financial
independence, as most of the international universities do not depend on their
governments.
He further said that besides the higher education sector,
college education should also be taken on priority basis. He was of the view
that our colleges are not capable of producing the expected results.
Dr
Ishrat Hussain, Former Governor State Bank of Pakistan and Chairman National
Commission for Government Reforms as well as the Committee for Development of
Social Sciences & Humanities also gave a presentation on the occasion
regarding issues related to the disciplines of social sciences and humanities
being faced by our universities.
He was of the view that our
universities have started giving more attention to social science disciplines
than ever before, adding that there is a growing feeling that while science
& technology is essential for development, teaching of social sciences with
a greater zeal has become essential to produce good human beings.
Prof Dr
Sohail H Naqvi, Executive Director HEC gave a detailed briefing about the
ongoing projects and initiatives of the commission being carried out amongst our
universities nowadays. He requested the VCs to strictly observe the completion
of these projects and take measures regarding the new projects to be initiated
in their respective universities.

chancellors, rectors and representatives of all public and private universities
in the country and will be concluded tomorrow (Thursday). The News
