IJT still rules the roost
LAHORE, Nov 24, 2007: Despite massive protests by students of the Punjab University
against activists of Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT), the varsity administration
has not taken any action to get its hostels vacated from them and to close the
organisation's hostel offices, It was learnt.
PU Acting Vice
Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Butt had ordered closure of the offices of all
the student organisations from the campus a couple of days back following
frequent demands and massive protest demonstrations against IJT activists by
students.
In this regard, PU sources said interestingly the notification
regarding closure of students' offices was not addressed to wardens and
superintendents of the hostels. Due to this, no one bothered to take action in
the hostels. "Jamiat is still operating in the university through its hostels
offices," they added.
The sources also said a number of IJT activists
including those who had been expelled from the university, are still living in
different hostels of the varsity especially Hostel No 1, No 4 and No 7. "They
(Jamiat activists) are still organising different events on campus, which shows
their influence in the university," the sources also said. It is pertinent to
mention here that PU students had started openly opposing IJT on campus after
manhandling and arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan by some Jamiat activists at New
Campus on November 14. Khan was in PU to lead a students' rally against
suspension of the Constitution when he was arrested.
A postgraduate
student requesting anonymity said the PU administration was giving a very
negative impression to the varsity students by not closing down IJT offices in
the hostels and not "kicking out" its boarder activists who had no affiliation
with any student organisation.
PU administration should ensure complete
ban on presence of any student organisation as majority of students had
expressed their anti-Jamiat sentiments openly, he also said.
Despite
repeated attempts to contact Dr Arif Butt, he was not available for comments in
this aspect. However, Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan said though the
notification was not addressed to anyone in particular, it was meant for all to
comply.
He added, "We will be reviewing the hostels situation by the end
of this month. Hostels will be cleaned up of outsiders," he claimed and added,
"They (without naming IJT) are in fact inviting us for a grand operation." The News
