Why are the university students in Karachi silent?
Karachi, Nov 27, 2007: The unusual silence from the student community of Karachi is
surprising as history is witness to the fact that they have stood up against
oppression. The civil society is more concerned because the students of some
private educational institutions such as the Lahore University of Management
Sciences (Lums) have come out to register their protest against the promulgation
of emergency in Pakistan, the curbing of media rights and throttling the
judiciary.
It is a common observation that the middle-class comprising
lawyers, students and other professionals have always been the back-bone of
agitation against state tyranny and injustice. Lawyers have shown their mettle
by boycotting the courts of judges who took an oath under Provisional
Constitutional Order (PCO) and the strangling of civil rights in Pakistan but it
is mostly quiet on the students' front. Noman Burney, Information Secretary of
the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) at the University of Karachi (KU) thought that
it is due to the heavy deployment of Rangers in the university, who are ready to
thwart any protest from the students. "The Rangers, following the orders of the
Governor of Sindh are ready to take action against the students," he added. The
Student Advisor of KU, Dr Nusrat Idris has sought a code of conduct from
students that they will not take out processions or hold meetings within the
campus. "These are the reasons for not seeking active participation from the
students," he said. According to him, the students' advisor had warned
them that Rangers will take action against the students without seeking a prior
approval from the Vice Chancellor.
A student who requested anonymity
said that "KU is under siege. The Rangers are deployed in every nook and corner
of the university, barriers are placed at the Staff Town gate and the Silver
Jubilee gate is closed for vehicular traffic. Not only this, even the KU
security staff is acting in highly objectionable manner."
Meanwhile,
Faisal Gondal of the Punjabi Students Association (PSA) said that "the PSA is
ready to fight against the emergency and the suppressive measures that
accompanied it, but KU has become a sort of a military cantonment area with the
presence of the trigger-happy Rangers," He admitted that the students are not
taking a united stand against the draconian laws due to different reasons. "We
(PSA) are ready to take the plunge and start the movement with the active
support of IJT, but the APMSO will not participate because it is the student's
wing of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) – a component of the ruling coalition
in the Sindh government," he explained.
The students and teachers of
Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (FUUAST), when
approached, only agreed to talk on condition of anonymity. An office
holder of the IJT said that the main reason why students cannot be mobilised in
their institution is the lack of political and social awareness among them. Some
student parties, according to him, are guided by their own petty interests and
adopted an attitude of 'wait and see'.
"I want to put it on the record
that we are not silent. We are adopting different methods to register our
complaints. We arranged for a Justice Corner for the students to come and
register their protest against the emergency but the Rangers used their force to
disperse the students. We tried, and were successful, in collecting signatures
of the students on a banner. But whenever we try to put it up, the Rangers
harass us," he pointed out. Gul, a student belonging to the PSF, said that they
were ready to join hands with the IJT and any other student organisation to
voice their condemnation against the emergency rule and curbs on the media but
the because of the questionable behaviour of Rangers, they have been unable to
do so. The News

"Its sad that Karachi being the hub of Pakistan has almost raised no voice from Student side against government actions. The reason as far as I could see that the APMSO being the largest student wing in Karachi is part of the coalition government. So everything is fair in love, war as well as COALITION."

"Yeah its true that students here in karachi are silent, in actuall we are not silent, only the fear of getting an action against us in our institutes makes us to shut our mouths. Students from the public institutes have still got the chance to protest against the institutes but the person like me is always heads down, some times we have to bear the peons as well. When ever we suffer from a problem even if it is caused by the university it self, but in the end its student who is runinng in the mangament building for a week normally and some times more than just a week if the management guy is on leave, if he is sick and add another new and intreasting reason which is the designated person is on "aitkaf" leave. To be honest I my self is suffering from problems and at the moment its more than 2 weeks that i have to listen the same reason from the personel of my univeristy that " come tomorow". Its really disappointing to come university everday to hear the same excuse. Today is 2nd ramazan in karachi and these guys dont even care where the hell Iam travelling from daily to university just in a hope that I ll get done with my problem today Inshallah. I cant speak just because a single word would skrew me and my rest of bachelors as well."
