HEC to provide Rs 65m to enhance facilities at KIU
ISLAMABAD, Nov 14, 2007: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) will provide Rs 65 million to enhance supporting facilities at the Karakurum International University (KIU) set up in the Northern Areas.
The project envisages construction of a KIU gatehouse and guardroom, language laboratory, seminar hall, common rooms for boys and girls, a generator room and an early childhood development centre.
The project also includes the purchase of equipment for the language laboratory, the technical and vocational workshops, furniture and equipment for the early childhood development centre, containers for stores and workshops, two buses, one coaster and provision of an Internet facility.
The KIU is the only university in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. It was established in 2002 as a federal university in Pakistan through the Northern Areas counsel legal framework order. The KIU is located in Gilgit, the administrative capital and largest town of the Northern Areas and has been educating around 1,500 students, including the one-third girls in the ten departments.
A total of 78 faculty members are present in the university, including three professors, one associate professor and 74 lecturers. Sources said that 236 supporting staff were also performing their duties in the university.
The remoteness and limited accessibility of the Northern Areas has meant that people here have had a high dependence on the natural environment, without access to many modern facilities. Growing population, greater communication links and infrastructure development are changing the traditional lifestyle and increasing the pressure on natural resources.
The strategic location of the university and its resourceful natural environment make KIU unique among the mountainous areas to promote socio-economic development through research education and manpower training.
Sources said the university had also planned to initiate a technical and vocational institute with an initial investment of Rs 18.76 million. App
