Khyber Medical University (KMU) priorities, VC rejects irregularities
PESHAWAR, Nov 12, 2007: The prime objective of newly set up Khyber Medical University (KMU),
the first of its kind in backward Frontier province, is medical education and
research development in medical sciences, which would result in direct outcome
of improved and enhanced patient treatment, said KMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr
Mohammad Daud Khan.
To materialise its objects, the KMU administration
after thorough deliberations and research put some priorities before it, which
he said would be pursued in letter and spirit. The top priority of the
university was to introduce physical as well as technological reforms, develop
human resource system and improve management of the constituent colleges of the
university, Dr Daud said while talking here Sunday.
The
university, he said, studied the current healthcare facilities in the province
and identified gaps in them and a strategy would be devised to fill those gaps.
He said that healthcare system in the province was single dimensional, as focus
was laid on cure. He said the university wants to shift the focus from a
single-dimension curative to a multi-dimensional comprehensive healthcare
approach to cover all elements of health - prevention, promotion, curative
intervention and rehabilitation.
There is serious lack of teamwork in
healthcare system in the province, which is basically doctor-oriented. What the
university wants is to develop teamwork wherein paramedics and nurses would
actively be involved, he argued. For the purpose, he added, the university would
focus on proper training of nurses and paramedics, which is a weak area in
healthcare system.
The university also aims at changing the current
medical and related curricula from stagnant, irrelevant, student unfriendly and
non-evidence based to dynamic, relevant and comprehensive one. "We are also
planning to change the examination system from annual to semester one so that
persistent evaluation of medical students could be made," he said.
The
KMU vice-chancellor was proud to mention that they would start giving the
medical examination themselves from this year. And the examination of current
first year would be given by KMU administration instead of the University of
Peshawar.
The university was planning to introduce and implement the
concept of academic audit, research audit and clinical audit, which would help
it take account of the students in their studies and medical professionals in
their duties, he said. The university was planning to set up research and
development cell in all its constituent colleges and it would provide Rs0.8
million to each college for establishment of the cell, he said.
Regarding the current situation of hospitals in the province, Dr Daud
said that the NWFP government has formulated Hospital Coordination Council of
which KMU was a major stakeholder. He said one meeting of the council has been
held wherein gaps in the hospitals were identified. Another meeting of the
council would be held soon to evolve line of action for overcoming the gaps.
To a question regarding the alleged shifting of 32 open merit seats to
quota of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) for admission to first
year in public sector medical and dental colleges, Dr Daud rejected the reports
as baseless. He said no open merit seat was shifted to quota for tribal and
backward areas. He clarified that as far as the 32 seats were concerned, they
included 25 seats in Bannu Medical College (BMC), six in Khyber Medical College
(KMC), and two in Ayub Medical College. "It was when Chief Minister Akram Khan
Durrani was demanding 100 seats for BMC, the governor had asked him that 25
seats of those would be specified for Fata students," he said.
"The KMC
had 250 seats in total but the college administration used to close admissions
on 244, leaving the six vacant for someone if the Supreme Court orders them to
admit him. Similarly, two seats in AMC used to be left vacant for the same
purpose," he said and added that Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai, who is also
chancellor of the university, directed them to fill the vacant seats with Fata
students and he would arrange admission for emergency cases. "These are the 25
plus eight seats, which became a cause of concern for many a students and their
parents due to lack of information," he said. The News
