Students of 15 Lahore varsities demand end to emergency
LAHORE, Nov 27, 2007: After intensive negotiations, students of 15 universities and institutes
of the City have agreed to a unified stance on turmoil in Pakistan.
A
statement by the LUMS Student Movement, said, "We, students of universities in
Lahore, raise our collective voice against the current state of emergency rule
and unite on a common agenda. Our demands are aimed at ensuring people rights
through a free and fair election process."
It added, "We unite to condemn
the coercive actions of the government that have moved Pakistan away from the
path of peoples' rule towards internal chaos through extreme restrictions of
constitutional freedoms."
The statement reads, "We call upon the youth
all over Pakistan to unite in order to denounce the state of emergency and
martial law imposed on the country's judicial organ and the people of Pakistan."
"We declare our intent to remain in steadfast opposition to the actions
of the regime and boycott the upcoming elections if the government does not
accept the demands, including lifting of martial law, restoration of the
judiciary to its pre-November 3 state, restoration of the Constitution to its
pre-November 3 state, removal of curbs on the media and release of political
prisoners and dropping of charges against them."
It added "We declare our
decision of refusing to recognise as legitimate any government formed under an
election process that precludes the acceptance of the demands. We call upon all
political parties of Pakistan that have repeatedly stated that they stand for
democracy and justice to stand by their declarations and boycott the election
held before the basic demands were met." The News
LUMS students laud APDM's election boycott call
LAHORE: The members of Student Movement at Lahore University of Management
Sciences (LUMS) lauded the APDM's call to boycott the elections, scheduled for
January, if by the given deadline the government did not lift the state of
emergency, withdraw the Provisional Constitution Order, reinstate the pre-PCO
judiciary and restore the constitution and drop all legal charges against
protesters arrested since Nov 3.
According to a press statement issued
by LUMS Student Movement, the students called upon all the parties in the APDM
including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz to stand firmly on these demands.
The students said the APDM's ultimatum was a healthy sign for Pakistani
politics. They expressed their hope and expectation that the nation's other
major political parties like the PPP, MQM and JUI (F) would also speedily follow
the suit and boycott the January 8 elections if the government did not fulfil
the people's wishes and these demands. They emphasised that it was vital for all
political parties to do so if they wanted to maintain any political credibility
in the eyes of public especially the students. The News
