London Metropolitan University helps applicants cut the red tape
KARACHI, Nov 28, 2007: Representatives from London
Metropolitan University's office based in Lahore conducted a seminar for
students who are applying for their pre- and post-graduate degrees at a local
hotel in Karachi Tuesday.
Seema Khan, the manager of operations at the
Lahore office, and Mark Bickerton, director recruitment, answered questions and
helped allay parent fears.
"London Metropolitan University is one of the
most popular universities in the UK for students from Pakistan," Khan said. "It was one of the first universities to open an office here."
The students who turned up all have unconditional offers. The university
representatives offered help with applications, advice on visa procedures,
campus accommodation and any other queries.
"We conduct interviews on
behalf of the university and I fly out to Karachi once every two weeks for the
admissions applications," Khan said.
Out of over 37,000 students
currently enrolled at the university, 7,000 are international students with a
majority of Pakistanis. The university's most prominent degrees are in Business
Management, Information Technology, Human Resources, Law and Finance.
Some parents turned up with their own questions. "It was a hassle when I
sent my eldest son to study abroad five years ago and we could not rely on any
counselors to help us with the little things which could confuse anyone, said
parent Ishtiaq Rasool. "But when I see them helping my son, I feel there is no
need for me to accompany him." Rasool and his son were walked through the
application procedure right up to the time he reaches London for the start of
the school year.
For others, it is just a matter of reassurance. "It
seems like a good opportunity because the tuition and living expenses are
reasonable," said Mariam Naseem.
The office also helps with credit
transfers and is starting a new program with the British Council called the PMI2
which will involve faculty exchange programs for reputable colleges within
Pakistan and the UK.
Who can apply?
The three-year undergraduate degree is advisable for students with
excellent FA/FSc results, or A-levels, or a two-year Bachelors degree with good
grades, plus at least 5.5 on the IELTS or 550/213 on the TOEFL. Students with
the NCC (Advanced International Diploma) in Computer Sciences from the College
of Digital Science (Karachi and Rawalpindi) will be admitted directly to the BSc
third year programme. The London Met also has one-year post-graduate programs
for students with a Masters degree or a four-year Bachelors degree. The Lahore
office, headed by regional chief Faisal Hassan, is located at Unit No. 1, 17
Aziz Avenue, Canal Bank, Lahore: (042) 111 566 366 or email
pakistan@londonmet.ac.uk. All applications must be directly submitted to the
