Marine Academy transferred to HEC
Islamabad, Nov 12, 2007: Pakistan Marine Academy, Karachi was formally transferred to
the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in a simple yet graceful ceremony held in
the premises of the academy.
The function was presided over by Prof Dr
Mukhtar Ahmed, Member HEC Operation and Planning and was attended by members of
civic society, officers and staff of the academy, says a press
release.
Addressing the ceremony, Prof Mukhtar Ahmed assured that the HEC
would make all efforts to see that a world-class engineering university is
established with a faculty of Marine Sciences, which would be capable of
catering to the needs of Pakistan and the world outside.
He said
developments in the maritime sector are of prime importance to achieve the goals
of engineering in Pakistan, adding that we have to lay equal emphasis on the
improvement of education in various disciplines of maritime sciences.
In
his welcome address, Commodore Imran Ansari highlighted functions of the academy
and the services it is offering to produce quality graduates to serve in
Merchant Navy.
Vice Admiral Muhammad Asad Qureshi HI (M), DG (Ports and
Shipping) also addressed the ceremony and congratulated the commandant, faculty
and staff of Pakistan Marine Academy for their hard work leading to the smooth
transfer of the academy to HEC.
Prof Syed Altaf Hussain, Project
Director University of Engineering, Science & Technology, Pakistan
(UESTP)-France at Karachi informed in his speech that UESTP is being established
in collaboration with the University of Technology in Troyes, France and the
academy would be transformed into a Centre of Excellence in Maritime
Engineering.
During the ceremony, flag of the academy was handed over to
Prof Mukhtar Ahmed as a symbol of transfer.
It is to point out that a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Chairman HEC Prof
Atta-ur-Rahman and Federal Minister for Ports & Shipping Senator Babar Khan
Ghauri in April 2006 for the transfer of premises along with the assets and
liabilities of Pakistan Marine Academy free of cost to HEC for the establishment
of UESTP. The News
