NWFP medical colleges seats increased

PESHAWAR, Nov 01, 2007: NWFP Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai accorded sanction to the creation of 25 additional seats in Kohat Institute of Medical Sciences and as a result thereof the over all admission strength of the medical colleges in public sector of the province would be raised from 576 to 601 seats.

This was decided at a high level meeting held here Wednesday with NWFP Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai in the chair at the Governor's House. Simultaneously, the existing admission strength of the institute has also been enhanced from 50 to 75.

The meeting, which besides the Secretary to Governor Azmat Hanif was attended by the vice chancellors of Khyber Medical University and Kohat University of Science and Technology, Professor Dr Muhammad Daud Khan and Professor Dr Lutfullah Kakakhel respectively as well as Principal of Khyber Medical College Professor Dr Fazal-e-Ahmad, further decided that the newly created 25 admission seats would be filled in from amongst the general merit list, finalised on the basis of the recently conducted entry tests at the provincial level and in accordance with the given criteria.

Meanwhile, Principal of Khyber Medical College Pro-fessor Dr Fazal-e-Ahmad, who is also chairman of the admission committee meant for medical colleges of the province, briefed the meeting about the prescribed admission process in respect of the Institute.

The meeting also took notice of a news item appearing in a section of the press wherein a wrong impression had been created about allocation of 25 seats to Fata candidates at the cost of merit candidates.

Khyber Medical University vice chancellor clarified that the number of seats had been increased for Fata students; however, the number of merit seats remained the same i.e. 576, which had now been raised to 601, due to enhancement of 25 seats in Kohat Institute of Medical Sciences. Talking on this occasion the governor appreciated the efforts of all concerned for successfully completing the admission process in the medical colleges purely on merit basis. The News
