PMDC secretary removed over 'corruption'
LAHORE, Nov 02, 2007: Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Secretary Dr
Sohail Karim Hashmi has been removed from his post following charges of
embezzlement and gross violation of rules of the Council, federal government
sources said on Thursday.
According to the sources, the PMDC
secretary allegedly violated the rules and regulations of the Council, having
bought Defence Saving Certificates under a PMDC account.
Sources said the
Prime Minister's Secretariat had conducted an inquiry into PMDC's previous
affairs and submitted a report to the competent authority.
Federal
secretary for Health Khusnood Akhtar Lashari confirmed the reports, and said
that PMDC had separately conducted a detailed inquiry into the matters. The
authorities concerned said the matter was now in the final stages and the media
would soon be briefed about the issue.
Dr Hashmi said that
the charges against him were baseless. He said that all the alleged violations
were matters of the Council and had been duly approved by the Council during
various meetings. He said that PMDC was not the competent authority to conduct
an inquiry, adding that he had obtained an order from the Lahore High Court to
quash it. He denied the charges and said he was targeted because of being "dead
honest."
Sources said that Dr Hashmi had allegedly violated
provisions of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Ordinance, 1962. He
allegedly created various provisions in the PMDC rules to put pressure on
medical colleges in order to extort bribes. Daily Times
