PU teachers, IJT protest emergency, media curbs

LAHORE, Nov 30, 2007: A large number of Punjab University (PU) teachers and some Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists protested against the emergency rule, curbs on the media and suspension of the constitution on the Old Campus on Thursday.

Teachers and IJT workers expressed their resentment over the emergency rule, suspension of the constitution and curbs on the media.

Around 120 teachers and some students carried banners, placards and badges inscribed with slogans against the imposition of emergency rule and curbs on the media. They shouted slogans against the emergency rule and urged the government to left the emergency.

PUASA president Dr Mumtaz Ahmad Salik told reporters that the teachers would continue protesting till the judiciary and human rights were restored to their pre-November 3 status and curbs on the media were lifted. He said that an FIR registered against 14 PU teachers for taking out anti-martial law rally on November 8, could not deter their struggle.

The protesters went inside the campus, after Old Anarkali Station House Officer (SHO) Babar Awan had asked them to end the protest.

The protestors also visited the Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Square on the campus. They showered rose petals at the square to express solidarity with deposed judges who had not taken oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO). The square was set up by the IJT to pay tribute to the deposed judges.

Some PU teachers opposed the IJT's participation in teachers' protest and condemned the Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) for allowing the IJT to participate in the protest

A PU professor said the IJT activists had tried to gain sympathy by participating in the protest, after being under severe criticism in the wake of manhandling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan on November14.

He said it was a teachers' rally and teachers condemned the IJT workers' participation in it.

Another PU teacher said some professors had also opposed to IJT workers' participation in the teachers' protest last week on Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool's arrival in the university. IJT nazim Attiqur Rehman said IJT workers had participated in the protest on PU teachers' instructions. He said, "IJT workers have just participated in the protest to show their solidarity with teachers. Daily Times
