PU administration thwarts anti-IJT rally
LAHORE, Nov 27, 2007: Punjab University (PU) students' anti-Islami Jamiat
Talaba (IJT) rally, scheduled on Monday, could not be taken out due to the
involvement of PU administration.
PU students said they would continue
their movement against IJT. Despite the PU administration's tall claims, they
said, IJT's offices were still open.
Ahsan, a PU Law College student,
said students had to take out a rally on Monday, but the PU Law College
principal Ashfaq Ahmad stopped them. On the orders of the principle, he said,
the officials concerned had locked the college's main gate.
He said PU
administration and IJT workers had stopped the Hailey College students from
taking out a rally. He said, "We will take out the rally after negotiating with
other students."
A Hailey College student said IJT workers and PU
administration had stopped students on the main gate. On Saturday, he said, PU
IJT nazim Attiqur Rehman along with IJT workers had visited the college. He said
the nazim had threatened students with dire consequences.
PU Law College
principal Ashfaq Khan said he had ordered the closure of the college gates, as
he was not in favour of any protest on the campus. He said he had announced that
there would be no violence on his college's premises. He said, "If IJT students
will take law in their hands, I will take action against them."
PU IJT
nazim Attiqur Rehman said IJT had not threatened students with dire
consequences. He said he had visited Hailey College to address a student
gathering. He said some students were hatching plans against IJT. He said IJT
was working for student rights.
PU registrar Dr Naeem Ahmad Khan said it
was a good sign that students did not take out the rally on Monday. He said the
students had postponed the plan after a dialogue with the Law College principal.
"We want students to excel in their studies," he said, "We are trying to close
IJT offices. We are concerned about students security." Daily Times
PU issues duplicate degrees to candidates
LAHORE: The Punjab University (PU) issued degrees to people
wanting to contest the upcoming elections. These people had passed the BA
examination, but did not have degrees. According to a press release issued by
the PU, the Election Commission of Pakistan required all contestants to attach
photocopies of their degrees to their nomination papers.
The PU's degree cell
and registration branch remained open till late during the past three days for
people wanting to submit nomination papers to the ECP. A large number of people
visited the PU to obtain their degrees or get their documents attested. Some
women wanted to get their surnames changed in their degrees, as they had passed
the BA before getting married. The university staff changed their names in their
degrees after consulting their matrimonial certificates. Daily Times

The Punjab University
has issued date sheets of practical BSEd, first, second and third professional,
2nd annual examination, 2006, and 1st annual examination, 2007. Detailed date

Govt conspiring to privatise PU: IJT
LAHORE: The Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) has said that the government is
conspiring to privatise the university. In a press statement here on Monday, it
stated that students would foil any such move which would be against the
interests of the students. The government was taking anti-student decisions but
students were united to face any such situation, it added. The News
