PU faculty flays emergency
Lahore, Nov 09, 2007: More than 170 faculty members of the Punjab University during a protest procession at New Campus on Thursday condemned the imposition of emergency in the country and termed the move unconstitutional, unethical and undemocratic.
They paid rich tributes to the judges who did not take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) and said no decision could be unbiased, just and free taken under the PCO. They also expressed solidarity with the students of LUMS and FAST-NU in their struggle for the restoration of constitution. They flayed ban on the transmission of national and international news channels and arrests of lawyers, students and civil society representatives.
Since the imposition of emergency last Saturday, it was the first ever protest procession of the PU teachers which was taken out from the varsity's Institute of Chemical Engineering to the Institute of Education & Research (IER) at New Campus while carrying banners in their hands.
The demonstration was staged after the general body meeting of the PU Academic Staff Association (PUASA) which is an elected body of the PU teachers. PUASA President Dr Mumtaz Ahmad Salik also addressed the occasion.
The general body meeting also passed several resolutions in this regard. One such resolution reads that every patriotic Pakistani is under great depression and the move (imposition of emergency) has also damaged country's soft imaged internationally.
This is an international conspiracy to defame defenders of Pakistan and to make them fight with public, reads another resolution.
The PU teachers under the PUASA also announced to support lawyer community in their struggle for the supremacy of law in the country.
A National Solidarity Committee (NSC) was also formed to chalk out future plan of action.
Meanwhile, the PUASA general body meeting also passed a resolution condemning the move regarding removal of PhD condition as minimum eligibility criteria to the post of PU vice chancellor. They said any move to appoint VC from outside the varsity would not be accepted at any cost. The meeting also condemned the Higher Education Commission for its alleged anti-teachers and anti-students policies. The News
