PU students receiving threats
LAHORE, Nov 30, 2007: Two students of the Punjab University have sought university
administration's help to trace out the people threatening them on phone and
provide them secutiry.
Amir Alyas and Naveed Alam students of the PU
Institute of Communication Studies (PUICS) met university students' adviser Ch
Nazir Ahmad on Thursday and informed him about the threatening phone calls. Both
the students informed the students' adviser that they were being threatened via
mobile phone calls and SMS for taking part in rallies against Islami Jamiat
Talaba (IJT).
Talking to us, Amir and Naveed said they had been
quite disturbed owing to the threatening calls and SMS. They said they had asked
the varsity administration to provide security to them and help them in tracing
those responsible. "We have given the mobile numbers to administration through
which we are being threatened so that the callers might be traced and stern
action taken against them," they said. Naveed said the callers associated
themselves with Jamiat adding "I am not sure whether they (callers) are IJT
activists or not". "These persons (callers) may be trying to take advantage of
growing students' resentment against Jamiat by using its name," he
added.
PU Student Advisor Chaudhry Nazir Ahmed said two students of PUICS
visited him on Thursday and had verbally informed him about the threatening
calls. He said PU administration would try its best to trace out the callers and
to punish them, adding hostels management had also been directed to keep an eye
on any outsider.
When contacted PU chapter IJT secretary information
Imran Kyani said no Jamiat worker was involved in such a heinous act adding
Jamiat had never acted upon such a policy. He said: "The Imran Khan episode has
ended as those responsible for his manhandling and arrest have been removed from
Jamiat". "We always work for the students' betterment at university. How could
we threaten them and degrade our organisation," he added. "The Jamiat will
extend its support to these students in tracing out the unidentified callers,"
he said.
