Case against 14 PU teachers
LAHORE, Nov 18, 2007: The Muslim Town police registered a case against 14 Punjab University (PU) professors on November 8.
The police registered the case under Sections 124, 188, 145, 143, 149 and 148 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) for protesting on campus against the imposition of emergency in the country.
The 14 professors are: Dr Mujahid Mansoori, Dr Mumtaz Ahmad Salik, Dr Nazir Ahmad, Dr Ismat Ullah, Dr Abdul Ghaffar, Rana Abdul Majid, Dr Harris Rasheed, Dr Mujahid Kamran chairman physic department, Syed Zia Ullah Shah, Dr Nayer Raza Zaidi chairman designing and art department, Dr Shafique Jhalandhry, Professor Samee Uzair Khan, Professor Ihsan Ullah and Dr Bashir Ahmad.
Professor Sami Uzair Khan, one of the nominated accused in the case, said that on November 08 the Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) had held a general body meeting after which 90 teachers had taken out a rally in which they held placards demanding the restoration of democracy and the judiciary.
PUASA president Dr Mumtaz Salik had also addressed the gathering. The rally had been peaceful, he said. However, he said, the police registered the case against only 14 professors and "up to 50 unidentified participants". He said two professors nominated in the case – Physics Department chairman Dr Mujahid Kamran and Designing and Art Department chairman Dr Nayyar Raza Zaidi – were candidates for the next PU VC.
Asked to comment on the rumours about a conspiracy against the two VC candidates, PU registrar Dr Naeem Ahmad Khan said, "The police have registered a case and there is no conspiracy". He said there were 68 vice chancellor candidates and the allegations on conspiracy against two of them were baseless. Police sources said the police would launch a crackdown for the arrest of the 14 professors. Daily Times
