Now students up in arms against emergency
ISLAMABAD, Nov 23, 2007: Highly charged students of Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) observed 'Black Day'
here on Thursday against the proclamation of emergency, clampdown on media and
the removal of judges.
They wore black attire and formed human chain. They
also staged a sit-in in front of different departments and delivered fiery
speeches against the emergency rule, which they described, was an attempt to
prolong the army rule in the country to keep their hold strong on the resources.
The students also condemned the killing of Baloch leader, Balach
Marri.
Hundreds of students representing different departments marched
across the university shouting, "Go Fauji Go, We want rule of law and "Fauji
Aamriat Namanzoor". The level of their resentment was very much obvious through
their critical slogans against the government and the former ministers. They
raised slogans hitting by name all the ministers one by one.
They were also
carrying black placards inscribed with slogans "We want Freedom, We want rule of
law and no to emergency". The students of other universities of the federal
capital also participated and few especially came here from Azad Kashmir to
observe Black Day.
Quite a number of faculty members from different
departments also participated in the protest rally despite that the Vice
Chancellor, Dr M. Qasim Jan has issued a circular for the faculty members, which
said, "The university premises should not be used for political activities. Any
faculty members wishing to show resentment over the political situation in the
country may do so outside the campus".
There are also reports that some
faculty members are being threatened by the intelligence agencies for not
participating in the protests and incite the students, otherwise, they will face
dire consequences.
The students of this university have been protesting
peacefully within the campus since the deceleration of emergency. They have also
launched a signature campaign at the campus. The students have written their
demands on a banner and getting it signed from the students.
The students
dispersed peacefully pledging to continue their struggle till the lifting of
emergency, reinstatement of the sacked judges and restoration of fundamental
rights of the people. They expressed that the students were very active during
the era of dictator Ayub and played an important role in his downfall likewise
their struggle would bring a change in this system. The Nation
