RMC 7th convocation, 350 graduated
Rawalpindi, Nov 28, 2007: The Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC) held its seventh
convocation here on Tuesday in which degrees were awarded to 350 graduates of
2005 and 2006 under University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore.
Higher
Education Commission Chairman Professor Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, who was the chief
guest on the occasion, announced a special grant of Rs40 million for various
research projects to enhance quality of research being conducted at the
Rawalpindi Medical College.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rahman advised
the fresh graduates to go into the fields of genomic, biochemistry and material
sciences for research work. "Follow your talent and do what excites you," he
said to students.
"Pakistan is the only country where students have
access to more than 40,000 books online free of cost. It is the students who can
transform this country into an island of excellence," said Dr. Rahman while
addressing the graduates.
"We are living in a world totally different
from the world of a few decades back. Today knowledge is the key to
socio-economic development. We have to invest in our children to attain higher
goals of socio-economic development and it is what we are doing for the last
seven years," he claimed and added that there can be no joy greater than the joy
of learning and joy of discovery.
He congratulated students on completion
of their graduation, parents for supporting their children and teachers who had
done a lot in making students successful.
RMC Principal Professor Dr.
Muhammad Mussadiq Khan, while highlighting the establishment and progression of
college, stated the Rawalpindi Medical College has now attained a respectable
position among public sector medical colleges of Pakistan. "Now we can proudly
put forward its achievements both in academic and clinical fields. Research is
one of those fields where RMC has made prominent advancements and in this
regard, we are thankful to the British Council and HEC for their collaboration
and economic assistance for research projects," said Dr. Mussadiq.
There
is a link programme among the British Council, HEC and the RMC, which involves
students at undergraduate level into research projects. They are also nominated
to visit universities in the UK as part of this research programme.
University of Health Sciences (Lahore) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr.
Malik Hussain Mabbashar also addressed graduates on the occasion and welcomed
them 'into the world of healing, care and compassion'. "Higher education leads
us towards creation of scientists and researchers, which are spotlight for
technological advancements in the areas of disease, diagnosis and treatment.
This inclination towards research will bring brilliance among our
professionals," said Dr. Mubbashar.
Appreciating the academic and
disciplinary environment at the RMC, he said, as a vice chancellor, it is always
satisfying for him to see the excellent results of RMC students in different
professional examinations, top positions and dozens of university
distinctions.
Medals were awarded to best graduates of the years 2005 and
2006 during the convocation ceremony. Head of Institute of Psychiatry Department
at RGH Professor Dr. Fareed Aslam Minhas was the chief organiser of the
convocation ceremony that was attended by members of academic council of the RMC
along with other prominent health professionals serving at allied hospitals. The News
