SSUET shuns misconceptions
Karachi, Nov 08, 2007: The general misconception that students who don't get admission
in the NED University of Engineering & Technology join other universities,
especially the Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET), has
been denied by Mubarak Zaman, chief of the public relations department of the
university.
While talking to us on occasion of the interviews being
conducted for the admission in the BS first-year engineering classes, he said
this "is incorrect because we are attracting students who have 72 to 78 per cent
marks in intermediate examinations." The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has
asked engineering universities to consider those students who have minimum of 50
per cent marks in the intermediate examinations but this has been increased to
55 per cent.
The process of interviews, that started from November 4 and
will conclude on Thursday (today), brought 3,000 prospective students. They
include 450 students from the far-flung areas of Balochistan and NWFP. "We
interviewed these students (from Balochistan and NWFP) on the evening of
November 4," Zaman said. The SSUET has allocated 10 per cent marks for the high
achievers in Secondary School Certificate (SSC), 40 per cent for Higher
Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations, 40 per cent for the aptitude test and
10 per cent for the interviews. The cumulative marks are considered while
allocating seats to the students.
There is no quota system in the
university and it does not ask for a Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) or
domicile certificate from the students. "The regular timings for the classes is
from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and teachers have to stay in the campus even if they
do not have any classes for the day," Zaman elaborated. The News
