Foreign expert value SSUET

KARACHI, Nov 01, 2007: The growth and expansion of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi is phenomenal. 

This observation was made by Pror. Dr. Shamim Jairajpuri, founder Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad Urdu University, Hyderabad Deccan (Andhra Pradesh), now on a visit here.

"I felt greatly delighted and satisfied after visiting this University where high standard education is being imparted under the guidance of qualified faculty", he said while speaking at a luncheon hosted in his honour at SSUET campus.

Prof Jairajpuri was taken round various departments of the University and shown the facilities for students. He also interacted with the faculty members and students. 

He appreciated the efforts of Aligarh Muslim University Old Roys Association of Pakistan in the establishment of this University. 

An Aligarhian himself, Prof. Shamim Jairajpuri, was very excited to see the University campus of the University full of young boys and girls and described it a manifestation of Aligarh spirit and a model for others to follow. 

Dr. Shamim who established and run Maulana Azad Urdu University in Adhra Pradesh gave a brief account of the history of Urdu University and said that future of Urdu is very bright in India in view of the fact that over 77,000 students are enrolled in Urdu Un1versity at present. 

He hoped that this institution will establish departments of modern science and technolgy at its 200 acres of land in the Education City.

He highlighted the importance of fields like bio technology and environment and said the temperature has risen everywhere because of global warming and it is being said that even mango cropping may start in a cold country like Britain. Similarly, here as well emphasis will have to be laid on raising crops which may cover rising temperatures.

Prof Shamim pointed out that 20th was the century of engineering and technology and 21st would be the century of biological science.

"We must not lag behind because of updates taking places in bio-technology and work more on this field", he emphasised.

To a question about future of Urdu in India, the visiting Indian intellectual pointed out that at present there are 18 national languages in India and if there had not been demand for Urdu, the 77,000 students would not have been studying in the Urdu University. He said in whole of India, some 3 to 4 lac students are studying Urdu.

When asked about publication of books in Urdu, Prof Jairajpuri said that after the establishment of Usmania University, both ways of teaching had proved successful and even Narsimharao did his commerce from Jamia University in Urdu. However, medical and engineering are taught only in English.

He recalled his last visit to Karachi in 1984 and said this place was just a ground and he was told that a University will come up here and he was highly delighted to see this University.

He said the world is fast progressing in Science and Muslim who taught science to world is today lag much behind. But he is hopeful that we will revive our past glories.

Earlier, Engr Z A Nizami, Chancellor, Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology welcome the distinguished visitor and gave a brief account of the history of the establishment of Sir Syed University. 

He said it was the result of joint efforts by all the Aligarians and their sympathizers that the first technical University in private sector was established in Karachi. 

He gave an outline of future plans for the expansion of the University on 200 acres land allotted in Education City. 

Engr. Muhammad Zakir Ali Khan, Honorary Secretary Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association while giving a brief introduction of the visiting, Indian guest said that Prof. Shamim was basically a Zoologist, who completed his entire education at Aligarh Muslim University. 

He is a scientist of international repute and his research work has been recognized at international level. He has so far produced over 30 Ph.Ds. Even after retirement from Aligarh Muslim University, he still has a laboratory there and conducts research. He has been recognised world over conferred highest degree of D.Sc. 

Prof. Dr. Saiyid Nazir Ahmad, Vice Chancel1oT, SSUET thanked the guests. The function was also attended by Aftab Ahmed Khan, President, Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu, Nusrat Mirza besides a large number of Aligarhians, faculty members and senior students. The Nation
