Tuition culture making students dull
Islamabad, Nov 23, 2007:The addiction of tuition has increased for the last couple of
years and a large number of students of schools and colleges are now being
helped by their tutors to get good marks for a better future.
The survey
conducted by Online reveals that not only the students of higher classes get
tuition but there are a large number of primary class students who are also
addicted to tutoring.
Parents have to pay a huge amount of money every
month if they admit their child in a private academy, whereas home tutors are
less expensive.
Tuition not only helps students in getting good marks in
their subjects but the instructors also make a good amount of money each month,
which ranges from Rs300 to Rs3,000 per subject and is considered a part-time job
to fulfil their surplus desires.
Raja Yasir, a government employee as
well as a part-time tutor, says that tutoring is an effortless worthy job. "I am
not a professional teacher, in fact, I am doing a government job. I earn Rs7,000
per month spending seven hours each day and at the same time, I earn Rs8,000
from tuition for just teaching for four hours a day, which I can't earn if I do
anything else".
Nida Yasir, owner of a private academy in Blue Area, says
her slogan is to 'correct the mistakes of students' as well as provide them with
'quality education', which they cant get from their schools or colleges
"I think the environment and attitude of tutors in academies is calm and
frank, which makes it much easier for a student to understand what the teacher
is saying, whereas in schools and colleges, these things are neglected and that
is why, parents are preferring academic education for their children," she
said.
Parents, on the other hand, say that it is the present time's need
and they are compelled to send their children to tuition academies. "My daughter
failed in BA, so I enrolled her in an academy after that and she passed her
exams getting good marks in her third attempt," said Ahmed Sheraz Saeed, a
resident of Sector G-10/2.
But talking to some people who have completed
their studies, it was concluded that to get help from tuition is not a bad habit
but to depend on tuition is something that students should
avoid.
"Tuition is like a dictionary, which only tells us the meaning of
words and it's our responsibility to remember that meaning," said Dr. Adeel
Arshad, who himself has never been tutored by anyone, adding, "A tutor can only
explain those things, which students are somehow unable to grasp in their
schools or colleges. After that, it's the students' duty to take in what they
have been taught and if they don't, then they are just throwing away their
parents' money". The News
