Governor announces upgrades for UET
LAHORE, Nov 20: Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid
Maqbool on Monday visited the University of Engineering and Technology (UET).
The governor presided over a seminar in which an action plan was made
for the project announced by General Pervez Musharraf for the UET Lahore,
Faisalabad, Kala Shah Kaku and Gujranwala campuses.
Maqbool said the
executive committee of the national economic council had approved Rs 5.93
billion for the project. He said the amount would be utilised for setting up six
specialised centres. Under the project, he said, 32 existing departments of the
UET Lahore would be strengthened. He said three new departments would be opened
on Kala Shah Kaku, Faisalabad and Gujranwala campuses.
After completion
of the project, he said, the total enrolment of UET Lahore would increase from
8,000 to 15,000. He said the number of teachers would also be increased from 458
to 828. He said 274 UET teachers would be given sent abroad for PhD.
He
said the extension of universities would bring a glorious future for the
country. He said, "We have not increased the engineering universities fees." He
said the government had given training to poor university students at the cost
of only $1,000 in four years.
UET vice chancellor Lt Gen (r) Muhammad
Akram Khan said under the leadership of Gen Musharraf the university's budget
had been increased from Rs 300 million to Rs 7 billion. He said the Punjab
government had given a special grant of Rs 325 million for the university.
Governor Khalid Maqbool visited various laboratories of the university.

Land, funds for new GCU campus
LAHORE: The government has allotted 371 acres and Rs 531million to
establish a campus of Government College University (GCU) in Kala Shah Kaku,
said GCU vice chancellor (VC) Prof Khalid Aftab. According to a press release
issued by the GCU on Monday, the VC made this announcement at a musical event
organised by the Endowment Fund Trust. He requested the GCU alumni to donate for
the university's programmes. He said, "When all institutes world over were
progressing, we were lost in our past glory, not realising the needs of the
time." It was difficult to move forward an institute that had remained stagnant
for a long time, he said. He said the GCU Lahore was located at such a place
that it could not expand. He said that for a long time the school had no
resources even to repair its building constructed in 1858. He said the
government, Higher Education Commission and some philanthropists then supported
the university to renovate and conserve the historic building. "The conservation
of a gymnasium at the university will be completed till March 2008," he added.
GCU Endowment Fund Trust president Javed Tariq Khan said the funds government
had granted were not enough to meet the development challenges faced by the
university. He said the Harvard University Endowment Fund provided $ 7 billion
to the alma mater. He said the GCU Endowment Fund Trust should also provide such
support to the university. "Financial independence is important for academic and
intellectual liberty," he added. Daily Times
