UHS to launch 16 new BSc courses in health sciences
LAHORE, Nov 20, 2007: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) in collaboration with the
Punjab government, is launching 16 new BSc courses in allied health sciences in
18 affiliated health institutions and medical colleges of the province by year
end.
The courses include, BSc in Medical Imaging Technology, Medical Lab
Technology, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Emergency and Intensive Care, Dental
Technology, Cardiac Perfusion, Biomedical Engineering, Speech and Language
Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Occupation Therapy, Dental Hygiene, Nutrition,
Audiology, Operation Theatre Assistant, and Ophthalmic Medicine. UHS Vice
Chancellor Prof Malik Hussain Mubbashar chaired a meeting of the faculty in this
regard on Monday. He said that the programme was of great importance as it would
help overcome the paucity of trained manpower and improve the quality of
healthcare in the province. He said Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool had shown
keen interest in these new BSc programmes and had asked the university to
facilitate its affiliated colleges in launching these courses immediately. UHS
VC asked the principals to nominate a focal person in their respective colleges
to start four-year BSc courses.
Prof Mubbashar said that education in
allied health sciences was very important as it provided qualified manpower for
essential functions of laboratory diagnosis, radio-diagnosis, rehabilitation of
patients, and use of advanced technologies such as nanotechnology, laser
technology and biotechnology. The UHS had taken the initiative to fulfil the
growing demand of medics in the country, he added. Prof Mubbashar said that core
mission of the university was to produce more and more MPhil and PhD scholars in
basic medical sciences. He told the faculty that each student of the university
would be evaluated by at least one foreign examiner. He called on the faculty to
identify talent in affiliated institutes for research as UHS had allocated 19
full scholarships for higher education in reputed international universities. It
was also decided that professional audit of teachers and teaching would be
started at every medical college to improve medical education in the country.
Postgraduate students seek exams postponement
LAHORE: Postgraduate students of MPH, MHM, MMCH, and M Phil Community
Medicine of Institute of Public Health, Lahore, have urged the chancellor/
Punjab governor to intervene to help reschedule their examinations, scheduled to
be held from December 21 under very special circumstances by the University of
Health Sciences, Lahore.
While explaining the reasons for demanding
postponement of their examinations through an open letter to Chancellor/Punjab
Governor Khalid Maqbool on Monday, students said that they would be availing a
shorter academic session as their postgraduate courses had started from January
31, 2007 and that the research dissertation, district, report writing and
teaching hospital attachment reports were still incomplete, which were
prerequisites for the said examinations.
Students in the letter said the
University of Health Sciences has failed to decide the nature of their papers,
whether they will be Long Essay Questions (LEQs) or Short Essay Questions
(SEQs). Furthermore, the UHS has imposed a decision to eliminate one question
choice with 60 per cent passing marks.
The Eid-ul-Azha is falling between
December 21 and 23 and the general elections were scheduled to be held in the
first week of January, 2008.
In view of the above-mentioned facts, the
postgraduate students said that it was obvious that they were passing through a
very confusing state of affairs, where UHS was neglecting their examinations.
They requested the chancellor to direct the UHS vice chancellor to hold a
meeting of Higher Education Board of Studies to postpone examinations scheduled
to be held from December 21. They have demanded resolve the issue of selection
of question format and fix 50 per cent as the pass marks.
When contacted
for a version, the UHS spokesman said the UHS Examination Department had
prepared the date sheet for the MPH, MHM, MMCH, and M Phil Community Medicine
examinations in accordance with the schedule provided by the administration of
Institute of Public Health, Lahore. He said how was the university able to know
and address students' problems when neither the IPH administration nor
postgraduate students had made any formal request. The News
