UK Education Exhibition cancelled for poor law, order
LAHORE, Nov 03, 2007: The British Council had decided to cancel Education UK Exhibition
in Pakistan owing to deteriorating law and order in the country especially after
the renewed wave of suicide attacks in Punjab.
The Education UK
Exhibition 2007 was scheduled to kick off from November 12 in Lahore followed by
exhibitions in Islamabad on November 14 and in Karachi on November 16. A large
number of top universities from United Kingdom had got themselves registered
with the British Council to participate in the exhibition since such exhibitions
provide a good opportunity to attract international students. Freight by the
British delegates was already dispatched to the City and hotels and flights were
also reserved. The exhibition caused trouble to participating delegates since a
few days were left in the event and necessary preparations were almost complete.
Sources said that the decision to cancel the exhibition was taken after
thorough consultations which took place between the British Council UK and the
British High Commission in Islamabad. The BCP website featured an update on
Friday that "the British Council Pakistan has postponed the 2007 Education UK
Exhibition following recent political events and the possibility of an
escalation during the election period. We regret any inconvenience caused to
visitors and exhibitors".
The British Council UK website said: "The
British Council has now taken the very difficult decision to cancel the
exhibitions in all three cities - Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi - following
extensive consultation with the deputy high commissioner in Pakistan and after
thoroughly reviewing the current security situation following the latest attack
in Rawalpindi".
Last year, the Exhibition UK Exhibition took place from
November 22 to November 27 in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi and many UK
universities set up their stalls and offered information to the prospective
students about qualifications and courses offered by their respective
universities.
Talking to The News from Islamabad British Council's UK
Education Director, Rakhshanda Khushal said almost 60 UK universities were
expected to participate in the exhibition. She said more than 70 UK delegates
were also expected to attend the exhibition. She said after 9/11, the British
Council had started organising such big events in Pakistan, adding this year the
exhibition was postponed owing to security situation. She said freight of the
participating universities had arrived in Lahore and arrangements were being
made to hand it over to the varsities' local contacts. The News
