Karachi University to issue another merit list. Flawed entry test issue
Karachi: The University of Karachi is likely to issue another
merit admission list of MS/PhD programmes based on the formula stated in the
admission brochures after a lot of hue and cry was raised against the 'flawed'
entry test.
This was decided at a meeting of the deans of different
faculties of Karachi University held on Tuesday. However, no notification was
issued in this regard.
Dr Shahana Urooj, a member of university's deans
committee, said that the meeting, presided over by the acting
vice-chancellor, decided to check the discrepancies in the merit admission list
and prepare another list.
However, she said, "The list issued on Monday
has not been withdrawn. It was a provisional list and we will prepare another
list according to the formula stated in the admission brochures, which means
that students who have secured 50 per cent marks in the National Testing Service
(NTS) test would be declared qualified," she said, adding that the provisional
list would be considered to fill remaining seats in various
departments.
According to the list issued on Monday, 700 candidates for
MS programme and 90 for PhD programme had been declared qualified. Only 722
candidates, however, had passed the NTS test.
The episode has occurred in
the backdrop of NTS fiasco last month. About 60 per cent of the total 1,770
candidates failed to pass the first pre-entry tests. Dawn

Fear & loathing in IBA
Karachi: I am sorry to say that one of the best business school of Pakistan; the
Institute of Business Administration (IBA) is faced with destruction from
within. The IBA administration with its bureaucratic and dictatorial attitude is
creating a lot of problems for its students. In the current situation where the
worldwide focus is on rights of the individual, such insolent violation of the
student rights is condemnable. Students had great hopes from Dr. Ishrat Hussain
but he has simply presided over an anti-student faculty's ham-handed handling of
their charges.
Mr. Mobin Khalili, the Controller Examinations, for instance,
has acquired for himself the image of a despot of sorts who is willing to expel
and suspend students on the slightest of excuse. And that too, without giving
them even a cursory hearing. Dr. Ishrat seems unable to control his choleric
Controller Examination. The result is a despicable environment of fear and
harassment in IBA. The Nation

Edu dept receives $100m from WB for 3 projects
Karachi: The Sindh Education Department has received the first instalment of $100 million from the World Bank
(WB) and has released Rs 2.2 billion for three education projects in the
province.
"The released amount will be spent phase-wise on the projects
approved by the Sindh Education Department for the year 2008-09," the education
department sources said.
Although a major chunk of the funds has been
provided by the WB, the education department will also contribute for the
projects, they maintained.
Over Rs 609 million of the amount has been
earmarked to distribute free textbooks to the students studying in classes I to
X in government schools. "As many as 30 million free textbooks will be
distributed in government schools as per the decision of the Sindh government,"
the sources said and added that the Sindh Textbook Board has started working in
this regard and will be done by April, 2009.
Around Rs 500 million have been
allocated to give scholarships of Rs 1,000 to all female students studying in
government schools in Sindh in classes VI to X, they said while giving an
overview of the second project.
When questioned about the inability of the
department to give out scholarships last year that is 2007-08, they confirmed
that Reform Support Unit (RSU) could not give out scholarships as per their
responsibility. The sources hoped that the same will not be repeated this
year.
According to the sources the third project involves the renovation and
maintenance of government school buildings for which Rs 1.2 billion has been
provided to the School Management Committees (SMC). "Special attentions will be
paid on renovating buildings in deplorable conditions such as the NJV School,"
they said.
It may be pointed out that for the last two years SMC were not
provided development funds to renovate schools.
The funds for the
distribution of textbooks and scholarships for female students will be handled
by the RSU. "The RSU officials have been authorized to use the funds," the
sources added. Daily Times
