Karachi University Degree annual examinations
Degree annual examinations started
Karachi, Nov 03: Degree level annual examinations 2008 will commenced from
Nov 3.
This was stated by the pro-vice chancellor of the Karachi
University, Prof (Dr) Akhlaq Ahmed, on Saturday. He said the BA regular
and external exams 2008 would start from Nov 3.
The BSc (pass)
examinations 2008 were scheduled to start from Nov 17.
The BCom regular
exams 2008 would commence from Nov 25 and for external candidates they would
commence from Dec 15.
The pro-vice chancellor, who was briefing
journalists, said that representatives of the home department and the
director-general of Rangers had also assured university authorities and
principals of colleges about providing maximum security at examination
centres.
Around 16 colleges for boys have been selected as examination
centres after a gap of 12 years.
The exams of female candidates are
already being held in selected girls colleges.
The principals had pointed
out some "sensitive" colleges and they were assured by the law-enforcement
agencies about extra security at these colleges, he said.
Dr Akhlaq said
that the examinations department of the university conducts about 104
examinations every year and the numbers of candidates appearing in different
exams are increasing.
He said that about 25,000 students were studying at
Karachi University in morning and in evening programmes while some 5,000
students were studying in different departments.
He said students
appearing in BA, BSc, BCom, LLB, BEd and other examinations were more than
100,000. He said that at present the university was facing a shortage of
classrooms due to the introduction of four-year BS programme, mid-term semester
examinations, MPhil and PhD lecture programmes.
He said that under the
present circumstances it was almost impossible for the KU to conduct graduate
level exams on the campus. App

World Bank (WB) lauds cut in HEC expenses
Karachi: The World Bank (WB) has praised the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for reducing its administrative
expenditures to a mere level of only one percent.
In a survey conducted by
the WB to assess the development and non-development expenditures of the HEC, it
was noted that out of the total budget of around Rs 25-30 billion, the HEC is
spending only one percent on administrative affairs. Despite having a large team
of experts and various departments, it is commendable on the part of the HEC to
keep the expenses within limits and this will be extremely helpful for the HEC
to recover from the prevalent financial crisis, stated the report.
Commenting on the electronic reforms (e-reforms) introduced by the HEC to
provide cheap services to researchers, the report said that these had provided
the students and teachers the chance to remain updated with global changes. Some
of the e-reforms projects mentioned are the Pakistan Education and Research
Network (PERN), Digital Library, Pakistan Research Repository (PRR), Campus
Management Solution (CMS), e-learning programme etc.
The report also
highlighted the number of officials working for the HEC and recommended
enhancing the structure of the commission to accelerate the work on different
projects being undertaken across the country.
The report comes at a time when
a number of eminent experts, including Pervez Hoodbhoy, have criticized the
HEC's performance and have been demanding a cut in the number of its
employees.
'No plan to slash HEC staff'
Karachi: HEC Executive Director Suhail W Naqvi said that the commission has no plans of cutting down the number of employees. "Out
of our total budget of Rs 34 billion, less than one percent is being spent on
management expenditure. The rest is all being utilised for the around 40-50
development projects we are running in higher education institutes of the
country," he said. Daily Times

Islamia College to remain under govt control
Karachi: Islamia College Karachi will not be handed over to an NGO and

College, Jamshed Town here on Saturday. Sindh government will not allow to put
future of over 20000 students at stake by privatizing government colleges in
Karachi, he added.
"I have held a meeting with Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul
Ebad Khan in this regard and apprised him about the measures taken by Sindh
government to resolve the issue. Governor Sindh also agreed on our stance in
this regard," the minister said. Sindh colleges will be equipped with scientific

Edu ministry compiling Urdu Science Encyclopaedia
Karachi: Aiming to initiate the idea
of translating scientific books into the national tongue, the Ministry of
Education is currently compiling a science encyclopaedia in Urdu.
Being the
first encyclopaedia in Urdu, it incorporates the evolution of science and
scientific knowledge from ancient times to the technology dependant age of
today.
The ministry has already started work on the project and has estimated
an amount of Rs 21.167 million for the compilation of the encyclopaedia.
"However, only Rs 11.706 million have been allocated for the project, under the
Public Sector Development Program 2008," revealed ministry officials, adding
that the amount was allocated on the recommendation of the consultation
committee of the parliament.
The Urdu Science Board (USB) has also been
approached for its services in compiling the encyclopaedia and has started work
on the project. "USB has started work on the Urdu Science Encyclopaedia and it
is going to be completed as soon as possible," said USB Director General Khalid
Iqbal Yasir. He revealed that the encyclopaedia will consist of 10 volumes, four
of which have already been compiled and in the process of being printed.
Throwing light on the organization's background, the USB chief revealed that the
organization has published over 750 books on 25 different subjects and has won
31 prizes for its publications.
"The publication of this comprehensive
science encyclopaedia will be the board's master piece," he said, adding that
the board is also looking to collaborate with the Federal Urdu University for
Science and Technology on the project.
"We, as graphic designers at the
board, are working on the Urdu Science Encyclopaedia day and night," said Danish
Ali, who is associated with the project, "Besides being an academic master
piece, the design and beauty of encyclopaedia will also fulfill the people's
aesthetic appetite."
Expressing his views, Tariq Mirza, a diehard fan of
books, termed the project a good attempt to research, establish, compile and
publish a valuable set of encyclopaedias. However, he maintained that the price
of the encyclopaedia should not be so high that it goes beyond the reach of an
individual who intends to own it. Daily Times
