No entrance test for BS admissions in KU

KU BS evening programme
Karachi, Nov 29: The Directorate of Evening Programme, University of Karachi, has clarified that there will be no entrance test for admissions to the BS Commerce. A spokesman for the directorate referred to printing errors in the prospectus booklet, and said that the requirement of entrance test as appeared on the page 13 was not for the BC Commerce admission.

He further stated that the number of seats in the Department of Applied Chemistry (Page 11) was "45" and "5", respectively, and not 96 and 15 as appeared in the columns.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Science Faculty, Prof Shahana Urooj Kazmi, on Friday announced that the 35th All Pakistan Science Conference will be held from December 20 to 23 at the KU campus. Dawn

UK changes immigration system
Islamabad: The UK government has implemented a number of important changes to the immigration system regarding the issuance of ID cards to foreign nationals, Tiers 2 and 5 of the Points Based System, the new Business Visit Visa, and increase in the marriage visa age.

In a statement issued here in Islamabad, the UK Embassy observes that on November 25, the government started to issue identity cards to foreign nationals, making applications in the UK to stay as a student or based on marriage. This does not yet apply to people making visa applications in Pakistan. The identity card will be introduced gradually over the next three years for all those coming to the UK for more than six months or extending their stay in the UK.

According to the statement, these changes will affect applications being made in Pakistan from now on. The new points based system will be expanded with the launch of Tier-2 for skilled migrants with a job offer, and Tier-5 for temporary workers and youth mobility. The current work permit scheme will become part of Tier-2. Tier-5 will cover those travelling temporarily to the UK for mainly non-economic reasons, including sportspeople, entertainers, charity workers and those travelling under international agreements. The government will also launch a new single generic Youth Mobility Scheme and abolish six existing youth mobility schemes.

The introduction of the new Business Visit Visa will clarify the business activities that can be undertaken by holders of this visa.

The statement also quotes UK Borders and Immigration Minister Phil Woolas having said, "The UK is a global hub for business and the changes we are implementing today will make it fairer and clearer for employers and employees to continue to do business here. This is a key part of the huge shake up to our border security this year".

From November 27 (Thursday), both parties to a marriage will have to be at least 21 years old before a marriage visa can be issued. This is part of the government's action against forced marriage. This complements the recently introduced new legislation to protect the victims of forced marriages.
