PU declares Friday as full working day
Lahore: The Punjab University has declared Friday as full working day and
now the PU administrative offices and teaching departments will remain open from
8 am to 3:30 pm on Friday with a break of one hour for Friday prayer.
This was decided in a meeting of professors held under the chairmanship
of Vice Chancellor at New Campus on Thursday.
It was also decided in the
meeting that gold medals would be awarded to the position-holders of both
semester system and annual system in the upcoming convocation scheduled to be
held on December 6 because both systems existed in PU and its affiliated
colleges.
It was also decided that degrees and awards would be given to
the session of 2005-07 in this convocation. In this regard, the VC constituted a
committee, comprising Controller Examination Prof Zahid Karim Khan, Prof Dr
Jamil Anwar, Prof Dr Amin Athar and Prof Dr Muhammad Ehsan Malik, to get gold
medals prepared for the convocation.
The VC directed all the deans of
faculties to present their recommendations to make a uniform policy regarding
tuition fee, prospectus fee and fee refund/transfer.
He said the purpose
of the universities was to conduct research and that was the reason that
universities were considered higher than colleges. He urged the teachers to
spare time for research work. He said the university was trying to generate more
funds from its own resources.
Special exam schedule: The Punjab University Examination Department has announced the schedule of BA
special annual examination of 2008 for Hearing Impaired candidates.
The
exam will commence from December 24, 2008. The last date for the receipt of
admission form with single fee is 19-11-2008 and, with double fee, last date is

ICS contests 'tampering with results' report
Lahore: The Punjab University's Institute of Communication Studies (ICS)
director has reacted over a news item "Institute of Communication Studies-Probe
into tampering with results" published on November 4.
Alleging, "It is a totally fabricated story prepared by the reporter",
ICS director Prof Dr Mughees Uddin Sheikh, in a letter addressed to the PU vice
chancellor stated, "This news item seems to
be a deliberate attempt to damage the image of ICS.
The ICS director has
also said, "We want to inform you that the reporter published a story regarding
one-year old result seemingly with malafide intentions."
The letter
further stated, "Dr Ahsan Akhtar Naz was wrongly reported as internal examiner
for the viva voce exam. It should be noted that Mr Ahmer Sohail Basra (radio
producer) was the internal examiner whereas Dr Ahsan was on ex-Pakistan leave
during that semester".
The ICS director has also sent a copy of
"original" result duly singed by external examiner Dr Shaista Nuzhat, internal
examiner Mr Ahmer Sohail Basra and Director ICS.
The letter concluded
with a statement, "This seems to be a planned and targeted campaign against the
institution like the Punjab University".
A number of things need to be
clarified by The News in connection with the ICS director's reaction to the said
story.
First of all, the said news item is in no way "a totally
fabricated story prepared by the reporter." The story is about initiation of an
inquiry by the PU authorities against the alleged tampering with results. This
correspondent has not alleged the results were tampered rather informed readers
that "The Punjab University (PU) administration has initiated an inquiry into
alleged tampering with results at the varsity's Institute of Communication
Studies."
Secondly the said news item is not "a deliberate attempt to
damage the image of ICS." The reporter has simply reported developments took
place in connection with alleged tampering of results. The PU authorities have
not initiated inquiry on basis of the story filed by this
correspondent.
Thirdly, the regret that the reporter published a story
regarding one-year old result is not justified. The question is if an inquiry
has been initiated now by the PU authorities why it could not be reported now?
The News did not conceal any facts and even published date about the
announcement of the result. Fourthly, the regret "Dr Ahsan Akhtar Naz was
wrongly reported as internal examiner for the viva voce exam" is again not
justified as The News had contacted Dr Naz and had published his clarification
in the same story.
Fifthly, the claim,î This seems to be a planned and
targeted campaign against the institution like the Punjab University," is bogus
since The News has never published any story on this issue before.
It is
also worth mentioning here that The News had also contacted ICS director Dr
Mughees uddin Sheikh to seek his comments before filing of this news item.
However, he had expressed ignorance over the whole issue and his views were also
published in the said story accordingly.
As far as, the copy of the
result is concerned the whole issue is based on this paper. The copy of
"original" result sent by ICS director to The News is the one about which the
external examiner had informed the PU administration that it, allegedly, did not
carry her genuine signatures. This is the very copy upon which an inquiry has
been initiated and now it is the duty of the PU administration to find out the
truth.
The story filed by this correspondent is not false since views of
a senior PU official were also published in connection with the story. PU
additional registrar Dr Aurangzeb Alamgir had not only confirmed initiation of
an inquiry but also informed that Institute of Biochemistry & Biotechnology
(IBB) director Prof Dr Muhammad Amin Athar was appointed as inquiry officer.
This correspondent stands by his story. The News
